fair price for 2004 1150R

I'm interested in a 2004 1150R , non-ABS, and no bags. Fully stock, has 3000 miles. Owner is asking $8,000. I'm thinking no more than $6,000. Does that sound fair? I'm asking because I'm new to this site.

8K sounds a bit steep. Your number is more within reason. I bought an 04 ABS a year ago with all the bags, Givi topbox, Sargeant seat and too many more options to mention for $6500. It had 17K on it.

You can have it for 8K though!

'04 R1150R's should be around the 6-7k range depending on what you're getting for the $. My friend, for example, just bought an '04 R1150R ABS with Wunderlich engine guard, cylinder guards, PIAA driving lights, GIVI Top Case and BMW Sidebags and a touring wind screen for $6.5K with 15,000 miles. Just consider what you're getting and how well the bike's been maintained. I've heard some say that a low mileage bike can cause more headache because all of the rubber stuff can degrade with a lack of use, keep that in mind. Just because it's low mileage doesn't mean it's worth $2-3K more than blue book. Good luck on the bike hunt!

OK. I just found out from the owner that he bought the bike 3 years ago, and only put 400 miles on it. So it has not had any service since he bought it 3 years ago. So it could be that the bike has only had its 600 mile service. Could 3 years of lightly used but unchanged fluids cause damage? and how safe are 5 year old tires? Thanks for your inputs!

Offer 5k and see what he says. That's honestly all I would expect to sell mine for and I've got it loaded up with goodies aka farklized. If you're unsure of the maintenance, I'm not even sure I'd go for it at all, keep lookin. But throw the 5k offer and see how low his price drops. If its down to below 7k, you can get likely get it away for around 6k, especially in this market.

You're probably going to have a bit of work once you get it, I would suggest changing many of the fluid and possibly tires, but other people know more than me about topics such as that.

For my $.02 I paid $8k for my '04 with 8k, ABS, parabellum fairing, motolights, system side cases, givi top case, new tires front/back, all services, and sargent saddle in 3/08...before the everything took a nose dive.

So I guess this bike you're looking at could have been worth $8k a year+ ago. Your $6k thinking is the right idea, the $5k idea mentioned is just a matter of how badly this guy wants to sell his bike, maybe he can sit on it for a year or two more and get what he wants for it.

Call your nearest dealer, describe the situation, and ask them for a quote on a major routine service plus new tires front and rear, battery, and anything else you might need. All the fluids need to go, 5 year old tires need to go, even the stuff like fuel injector hoses could need replacing. I'd add this number to whatever you're going to pay for the bike and then decide if it's worth it. Doing routine services yourself is great but after sitting for a couple years it would be nice to have a shop get you to a good baseline to start from.
