I am interested in buying a replacement for my totalled R1100R in the next couple of months. Does anyone have experience purchasing a high(er) mileage R1150RTP?
If so, what are the potential mechanical pitfalls in a 50k+ mileage police bike?
How difficult and expensive is it to replace the back police box with a passenger seat?
The online prices are very tempting as long as it is not a money trap down the road.

in the UK there's a couple of BM specialist breakers (MotorWorks & MotoBins) who can give you a lot of help with this sort of thing.

I don't know about UK, but few years ago, the guy I've met at the Daytona bike week, was very disappointed with his Haley Davidson.
After a few days camping together and riding around Daytona, we stopped at the BMW of Daytona and the deal was made on the spot.
They had at least 7 or 8 R1150RPT bikes. All were priced the same and all had about 50k to 60k.
I don't remember exact numbers but I know for sure that he paid an extra $800.00 (Parts and labor) to convert that bike back to NORMAL RT.
DIY will be much cheaper.
I think that police bikes are very well maintained and 60k for 1200RT is not a big deal.
I would buy 3 years old bike with 60k much faster than I would buy 6 years old bike with only 3k

I'm in the US, Pennsylvania to be exact. I've seen quite a few R1150RTP for sale on eBay out of California, but aso several East coast BMW dealers that advertise. I suppose the condition of the motorcycle, even though well maintained, will depend a lot on whether it was driven in city or highway conditions and on the officer's driving style. I suppose those are the same unknowns one faces whenever buying a used bike.

I bought an ex-CHP R1100RT-P.
I did some research and found:
ex-police bikes NOT sold thru dealers are often ones that have been crashed and repaired.
Not sure about other agencies but CHP lease theirs from 2 Cali dealers. AT around 60,000miles they are retired, taken back to the dealer, gone over and sold.
The highway patrol bikes are better than city bikes because they spend most of their time cruising whereas the city bikes tend to be thrashed more.
I paid Long Beach BMW $650us for a rear seat conversion kit. There are a lot of pieces in them and it is not a standard BMW kit. Rather it is put together by a third-party company. This kit was several hundred cheaper than buying all the parts individually. I also made back some of that by selling the original radiobox etc to a guy in Germany.
The CHP bikes were always serviced at the BMW dealer and synth oil is used.
My bike was brilliant! I left the front and rear crash bars on and with the black and white livery it looked awesome!

You do not see new 1200s in Nor Cal yet the CHP are taking their 1150s out to 100,000. miles due to contract delays. They are seviced at dealers and anything wrong is replaced or fixed. If you find one from Cal it will have been ridden hard but services well.
