After getting a new helmet recently and still suffering from lots of wind buffering & noise, I decided to remove my bike's flyscreen.
What a difference! It is MUCH quieter now, although I have to deal with the pressure on my chest when riding...but overall it was definitely worth it for me.
I still have been considering a touring-type windscreen, but I'll just have to wait for a used one...

There's also a *sport screen*, somewhere in between the fly and touring size. I replaced my touring with a sport as I just didn't like the look of the larger screen. So far, so good.

FWIW, Yes, the sport screen is very good, even better with a laminar lip.
I also have both the BMW touring screen and a touring one from Cee Bailey's for comparison. The Cee Baileys is a superior screen to the BMW touring by any measure...buffeting, clarity, maintenance, size availability, etc., and it fits the same mounts as the BMW sport and touring screens. In a few minutes, I can switch between the sport and Cee Baileys, depending on seasonal transition.

I have the BMW touring shield and find the noise is bothersome. With ear plugs its OK.
I have tried the Cee Baileys touring shield and could not really tell the difference.
I'm wondering if anyone has tried the national cycle street shield EX on the R1150R. If all shields are going to create noise anyway, this one will allow me to remove it in a few seconds without having mounting hardware sticking out like a sore thumb. I too have found that no shield at all is the most quiet ride yet on this bike. The NC street shield EX would only be used when I'm interested in reducing the wind pressure at higher speeds.
From the looks of the literature, It might fit around the headlight area. I would think some bracket fabrication might be necessary for the lower mounting bracket.

I went down the same path. New rider who thought all was well until mounting a Honda VFR. Wow, no buffeting. Removed my flyscreen and rode for a couple of months in non-buffeting bliss. After tiring of excercising my stomach at highay speeds I scored on an old Wudo fairing. Classic cafe styling and really affordable, $75.00. What a difference. No chest load and perfect for my 5'8" height. Good clean air around my helmet and noticable relief of 35 degree air up my faceshied. I think I got lucky with my first try. Goodluck with your quest
