left side abs light flashing and high idle problem
I have an intermittent problem where sometimes when I start the bike (04 1150r) the left side abs warning light stays on when I ride away. To fix it, I stop and turn off the bike and normally upon restarting the light will and turn off after riding away (act like it should). Sometimes I have a high idle (2000 rpm) that also stays high until I turn the bike on and off again. Brakes work fine at all times and the two problems are not always happening together. I did create a problem a few weeks ago when I tried to lube the right hand brake lever with some spray lube lube (in the dark, night before a trip) and I shorted the switch. I cleaned the switch with some CRC electrical spray cleaner and blew it out with air and it has worked fine since. I have not researched any of this, but my first guess is the oem battery might be starting to lose it's full charge and is causing the abs check system to act up(???) What is the best replacement battery to get if this is the problem? Odessy? Any other ideas? thanks in advance.

You don't mention that the ABS doesn't work so I assume it does. The thing is voltage sensitve so you may be on the right track looking at the battery. Some of the ABS failure indications I have seen here have been related to bulb failure. It must cause a voltage imbalance that gives you that light. My own experiance was a ;ittle odd. I stalled the motor on start up one morning, and had a little trouble re-starting. Upon driving away I had the flashing ABS failure light, and indeed, no brake servo action at all. I shut down and re-started with no change. I rode on home with basically no brakes. You have some braking action without the servo, but the effort is high to get much braking action. I had read about the ABS voltage problems on the forum here, so when I got it home I put on the charger for about 12 hours. Never have had a reoccurrance. When my original battery started conking last spring, (it was getting hard to start every time) I still had no problem from the ABS circuit. You might also take a look at the sensors to make sure they're clean. Good luck with it, but I think it's a minor thing you'll resolve quickly.mcmarcia wrote:Anyone else ever have the left light flashing while driving? I don't get caught in the rain, I ride in it on purpose.
Re: left side abs light flashing and high idle problem
Thanks, I went throu the brake server failure when I overlubed the brake handle pivot and shorted the microswitch. Had the right side ABS failure light flashing and you get an intense, "Oh s*** I'm going to die" feeling as you clench and squeeze all four fingers on the brake handle waiting for the bike to slow down. I was loaded to go to NM. It was an easy fix, but I may spray and blow out the right handle again. Today the left light acted up again for 10 minutes and then the light went out when I shut the bike down at a stop sign. I figured out the left light does not flash, it just stays on when it should be off. Duhhh I also noticed that the right side ABS failure light stopped doing the start up procedure this afternoon, that is new. I think battery needs to go. I will research batteries and see what looks to be a good replacement. No problems with the high idle for a few days. I also lubed the high idle mechanism yesterday and it works way better today.
