Road & Restaurant recommendations MI, WI, MN

Post by Daryl_stamp »

I'll be riding through Michigan over the weekend and into WI and maybe Minnesota.
My route is undefined, but general direction is from Sarnia ON to Macikinaw, ultimately ending up in Palmyra WI for some work on Thu/Fri next week.

Where's the best roads and best places to eat (Diners/Drive-ins & Dives style)?

Regards,

DLS

Daryl:

Not sure where you're planning on hitting MN, but if you go to Duluth, try the Canal Park area on the waterfront ( use Lake Dr. exit from 35-it's by the aerial lift bridge). Nice area and lots of food/drink options. You could also then head north up highway 61, take the Scenic drive (old highway 61) that runs along Lake Superior from Duluth to Two Harbors-very nice ride and this is the Grandma's marathon course. Keep going up 61 along the shore and there are many areas to stop, great scenery. Keep going up to Grand Marais which is very nice.

If you're heading south of Duluth, instead of taking I-35, try highway 61 which basically parallels it but is much more scenic and runs through the small towns.

Have a great ride!

Take Highway 61 south from Duluth (runs mostly parallel to Interstate 35). Stop at Tobie's in Hinckley for some of the best carmel rolls anywhere. If you're going to Wisconsin, I have heard that a restaurant called The Confluence in Prescott is absolutely world class. Prescott is at the confluence of the Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers. Another great stop in Prescott is the No Name bar. A lot of Harley riders hang out there...and they have the world's best bloody mary...called the Happy Meal. Prescott is about a half hour ride from St. Paul, MN. Finally, go south on Wisconsin Highway 35 (not to be confused with the Interstate of the same number). Check out the little town of Stockholm, WI...a lot of arty type stuff there...and then south to Pepin, WI...and the Harbor View Cafe. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday, no reservations, no credit cards (cash and checks OK), and the wait can up two hours on Saturday. Better days are Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. The food is outstanding and it's just a very friendly place. Harbor View is consistently ranked as one of the top "destination" drives in the Upper Midwest...and you'll love the road along Lake Pepin (a two mile wide, 22 mile segment of the Mississippi River). You can cross the river into Minnesota at Nelson, I think, and the drive north on highway 61 is also great. Enjoy the towns of Wabasha, Lake City, and Red Wing...but no spectacular food like Harbor View, in my opinion.
