Is it just me?

One of the things I like best about my R1200R is looking straight down at the cylinders sticking out in the breeze, one just aft of the other. I usually do this a couple of times every time I ride, when it's safe to glance down for a second. I think it reminds me of sometime in the 70's when I sat on a BMW at a show and looked down and thought "How cool, and will I ever be able to afford one of these". I couldn't do this on my R1150RT and I missed that view alot on that bike. Anyhow, I'd like to know if any of you find this a pleasing sight as well, and why. Thanks, Hank

When I think back on my R50, which I owned in 1965, that's exactly the image I have. I find that the memory of the rounded heads is more pleasing than my current view of the more squared off hex heads, though.

Its the best view, in my opinion. I too can't but help look down at the cylinders.

Best view for me is standing on the pegs and looking down. When its safe
to do so.

Yes, I too like to gaze down upon the jugs from time to time. 'Twas always thus. That might be one reason why I've always liked my boxers bare. Why do I do this? Who knows? Maybe I think I'm Snoopy stalking the Red Baron and making sure the plane is running well before entering the next dog fight. One thing is for sure, whenever I ride a boxer I am reminded of airplanes from the earliest days of aviation.

My son-in-law came for a visit last week. He rides a K75RT. I told him that my new R1200R is quite simply the nicest bike I have ever ridden. After riding mine, he declared that I had not done the bike justice. These are stupendous motorcycles that we have the privilege to own and ride.

Here here! I agree with all that has been said. I'm of an age that I find the high "butt in the air" rear fender a bit odd, but looking down from my saddle, its all good.

I started enjoying glancing at the cylinders on my '99' 1100R. As corny as it sounds they almost seem like wings of a sort sticking out the sides like that as the bike rolls along. I also even imagined the heat efficiently coming off the deeply finned cylinders but, (and more distrubing to me) I almost think the cylinders on the R1200R are there more for show just because I know the bike is more oil cooled than air. Yep thats weird!

Yeah, me too. The only bike I really miss and really regret selling was my 1959 Earles-fork R-60. I spent a lot of time gazing at those cylinders on long desert crossings...

Yep I agree with all of the above and the biggest mistake I ever made in my life was to sell my 1961 R69S

Hehehe, you are not alone As matter of fact- I am able to look at 2 different sets of cylinders- one is R1150R and another 1971 made Dnepr K-650 . Clearly, there's nothing more pleasing than looking at naked jugs... the cylinders on the bike aren't bad either. (I know... you were all thinking it...) Those Moto Guzzi ad's where the guy is laying on the bike holding the jugs in his hands are more than suggestive...

But seriously folks, I just few in from NY and are my arms tired...

No. Seriously. A few years back I bought this scale model of a boxer. I looked at it from the from the top, I thought that it reminds me of a big breasted woman lying on her back (have I stepped over the line?) and I noticed that one of the cylinders was offset to the back... I thought to myself.... pffffttttttt..... nice scale model, they can't even line up the cylinders... Then the light came on... I had never really thought about it... well of course... they share a common crank, they have to be offset... duh!

So, now every time I look down I think... yup, still offset... and I look at my left cylinder and think... yup... still seeping oil from the oil fill cap...

I agree. My dad had a black with white pin striped R60 when I was in High School. I was riding a Honda CB750 K1 in those days, but as the years went by I always had a soft spot of nostalgia for that bike.

When I saw the R1200R with the same paint scheme I had to go for a test ride. I had to buy it.

You've got that right! Every time I ride an older bike now I wonder how I lived through the experience. In 1970 my R75/5 really seemed like the best bike that could ever be. Now when I ride one, I wonder that I didn't get killed what with the lousy brakes and poor tires and the herky-jerky due to the shaft reaction. Sheesh.

I've got several friends who are very hard to keep up with whist riding their /5s on a twisty road. Smooth riders. Rarely use the brakes and lose that precious momentum.

Why not have both? If I'm just going for a after dinner ride I usually have a hard time deciding which one will come out of the garage. Naturally long distance the new bike comes out. As far as the drum brakes, short wheelbase and harsh suspension, I suggest to take a ride in a 1970 Corvette and then take out a new one. Same deal, a lot changes in 38 years, even people.

Mr. Costello - I don't want to highjack this fine topic. Please start a new thread and give us some info/pics/and a review of the fairing on your r1200r. What I'm looking at appears to be a lightweight alternative to a r1200rt. Plus, you can see those beautiful jugs. Thanks.
