Clanking Front Brake Rotors

Post by DPA »

It sounds as if the front of my R1200R is about to fall apart! Does anyone else get metal on metal 'clanking' sounds from their front brake rotors? I know they are supposed to float, but mine seem to really float and make a rather embarrassing 'clanking' sound whenever I hit small bumps in the road. I'll ride into a parking lot or something and I get the attention of folks when they hear my 'rattle-trap' NEW R1200R clanking along. My 2008 was built in November of 2007...not sure if that means anything. There is a new R1200R on my dealer's showroom floor (similar build time). Those floating rotors feel quite a bit more solid...not as much side-to-side play as my rotors. I did have my 600 mile service completed yesterday and the tech. said that all the bolts were tight and things looked safe. He was in agreement that the 'clanking' was odd/excessive. He put in a 'tech email' to BMW. I guess it takes up to a week for them to respond. My service advisor said the rotor on the new bike on the showfloor may loosen-up like mine once the bike is ridden. Anyway, is anyone else experiencing 'clanking' front brake rotors? If this is indeed the intended design...I gotta say it ain't right...

That is all for now...

Mine is Dec'06 build with 11500km on it. I flog the brakes a bit more than most as I'm trying to learn how to get the most out of the ABS in parking lot practice stops. I rarely get the ABS to activate so maybe I'm not trying hard enough.

Back to what you're asking. My front brakes seem solid - I haven't heard any strange noises at all. Something doesn't seem right on your bike. I would persist as who wants to have any doubts about their front brakes?

After my 600 mile service, I set off on the ride home when I approached a queue of traffic. I attempted to apply my front brake, the lever was stuck solid. As I neared the back bumper of a van and things started puckering, I was able to force the brake lever to the bar. There was a 'clanking' sound coming from the front brakes and my brake applied, stopping me short of the bumper. Stopped to look at the brakes, could not see anything untoward, tested the brakes again and it appeared to function. I limped back to the dealer who said they suspected a seized caliper and replaced it under warranty. I have had no further incidents since. The bike is an 08 model.

Yup-I spoke with the head BMW tech at the dealership the other day and he said, "I am ordering you all new front brake parts because the clanking sound is not acceptable." He assures me they are safe to use right now...just noisy.
