R1100R Uncomfortable Seat!!

Post by jimz49 »

I would like to know what others think is a comfortable seat for the R1100R. I find the stock seat very uncomfortable after about an hour of riding. Seems I tend to slide forward and settle in a low place just behind the area where the seat rises to the tank. This riding position, after a while, makes everything feel as though its jammed into one spot. I love the bike, but cannot stand to ride long distances on it. Conversely, I have an R1100s with the bars mounted above the upper tree and can ride all day without issue. I think the slight forward leaning position takes pressure off my bottom end and there is no sliding forward with this seat and posture configuration.

So, I'm looking for opinions on which seat might make riding the R1100r more enjoyable on longer rides. Here is some information about me:

height: 6"1"
Weight 205
inseam: 32"
and I'm not exactly a young guy anymore.

WOW... this is a surprising post i thought that the R1100R seat was the best i have tried
and shaped like a western cowboy saddle the ergonomics looked like a sound design
did a couple of 600km days and felt like i could do more thats a feeling not many bikes give...

My recommendation is to get some leather trousers because they dont slip at all on the seat
where the nylon flying suits were almost dangerous.

I installed a Bill Mayer saddle - MUCH better than stock!

Reg, do you have any pictures of the Bill Mayer seat on the bike?

The stock seat on mine sucks, too. I even fabbed a riser to lift the front about 1/2". That helped the "forward pitch" fairly well, but that's not the biggest issue for me.

The seat's front "hump" is jammed into my crotch, after a couple hours I gotta get off for a while.

To make matters worse, the rear "saddle lip" keeps me from being able to move back in the seat. No alternate seating position......I'm trapped!

Possible Solution:
*Use an electric carving knife to re-shape the foam.
*Carve the rear lip completely off.
*Carve out the front hump a couple inches.
*Make the remaining center area level.
*Re-cover seat with good quality vinyl from auto trim supplier.
Ride FAST, it's safer that way.

You're exactly right about the cramped area. There isn't enough room between the front and rear hump to be comfortable for any length of time. Have you, or do you know of anyone that has done any of the mods you mentioned? I would like to do something...either buy an after market seat that really works, or modify the seat I have. Has anyone modified their seat and gotten good results?

I noticed the R1150R front seat has a flat area and no lip around the back. Is it possible to fit an R1150R front seat to the R1100R and still have something that looks descent?

I've done it to another bike in the past. Worked well, did'nt look all that great.

I've been searching since winter for a used R11R seat to carve up, and still have my stock one intact for when I sell the bike. Ebay continually shows every imaginable BMW seat listed except a 850/1100. (argh!)

Must not be to many R1100R's out there; or everyone, except us few, must be very happy with their seat. BMW definitely made a change to the seat when they came out with the R1150R. Either it was just time for a design change or they heard it loud and clear from the few of us that couldn't find a comfortable spot on the R1100R seat if our life's depended on it.

I'm 6'2", 205 and 34 in inseam. I have an R1150RT with the Comfort seat in high position with seatjacks on it (without the seat jacks it REALLY sloped forward!!) and my R1100R with stock seat on high position.
The RT is now perfect for my big arse and I actually find the R1100r position comfortable but will experiment to see if I can raise the front up just a tad to see if I can get it MORE comfortable  !!

I have the R1100R seat set to the highest position and still find myself sliding forward. When you say the R1100R seat is comfortable for you, are you doing long rides on it? I can ride for an hour or so, but after that I'm squirming all over the place to get comfortable. I notice that most after market seats are flatter and wider in the seating area. I've looked at the R1150R seat, it definitely is shaped more like the after market seats. The rim around the back of the driver seat is gone, giving more room to slide back to find a better position.

Monday I rode 200 miles in the Texas Hill Country twisties without a problem.
Also, your riding position/posture affects your butt greatly
I ride with a straight back (like riding a horse) and wrists/forearms relaxed, with my pelvis tipped forward. most of the time. You can then modify your butt/back posture during the ride by tilting your hips/arching your back so that you dont get a set pressure point.
