Bike just stopped running!

So I just took my 03 R1150R out for a ride. Rode for 2 miles, stopped got gas, started it back up and even before I was able to pull out of the gas station it just died instantaneously. It didn't even sputter, just shut off. I just replaced the battery with a BMW gell battery and this was the firt ride since then. This was actually my firt ride of the season. Any ideas as to what this might be...computer? It cranks over fine but doesn't even give a hint of starting.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Any chance you filled with diesel?
- Was this a major gas company? Any chance you got water in the gas?
- do you hear the fuel pump?
- When you replaced the battery, did you remove the tank or just lift it? If removed, are the quick disconnects well seated? If not, and the fuel pump is running, you can "dead head" the fuel pump and blow a line off the filter in the tank, or just not get gas past the QD.
- Do you have fuel spray? Remove one of the injectors and point it into a coffee can or something, then turn the crank. Do you get a good spray pattern of 10-12 inches?
- Do you have spark? Take off a plug and hold it against a ground (wear gloves or something so you don't get shocked). Crank the engine and look for a spark.

Maybe this will get you started in isolating the problem.

Check for blown fuses as well as the fuel line for bents (when you put the tank back, you may have
accidentally caught the fuel line between the tank and something).

Not sure how to check the injection control board, but if it fails then indeed the bike just dies...
Just replaced one on my car, and it was an expensive repair...

Update:

I checked for spark and I am good there. I the fuel pump in running. Pulled the tank and checked the hoses inside the tank and they are all intact. No diesel, good gas from Mobil.

The only thing I am concerned about is whether or not I have the two hoses that run out of the tank connected properly (not the fuel hoses). What are these hoses. One X's on it and the other doesn't. Which nipple does each one connect to?

When the bike did stop running I heard a weird howling type of noise from the tank. It did it everytime I switched the key on off and on. Each time the fuel pump also ran. Now that I have pulled the tank and I just pluch the fuel pump in it sounds fine with no wierd noises. This is why I am thinking it might have something to do with the hoses. :-k

It would probably still run if the two small hoses were switched. One runs from the small hole in the gas filler neck to the hoses under the bike behind the right rider foot rest. (Water drain.) You can blow in the hoses where they connect in the middle and feel or listen for air coming out of the hole in the filler neck to see which is which. The other hose goes go the charcoal cannister. No big deal if they are switched, so if in doubt try it the other way. Do you have fuel spray from the injectors when you try to start the bike? (pull one of the injectors and point it into a can. Should be a good spray pattern.) If you have spark, fuel, and air, it should run.

Thanks for the suggestions. Have not checked the fuel injectors yet. Next thing on my list.

What is the hall sensors and where is it located? What is its purpose?

Update:

Turns out I had the two hoses coming from the filler neck switched. I switched them back, instsalled the tank and she fired right up. Haven't gone on a ride yet so I don't know if I have just temporarily masked another problem. I wil keep you informed.

Here's a tip for the future: whenever I disconnect hoses of any sort - or wires, too, for that matter - I always mark BOTH SIDES with a dab of paint, or colored marking tape. Or your lady's nail polish. Makes re-connecting a lot less dramatic ...

OR ...leave one connector connected to the top hose and leave one connector connected to the bottom hose. That way there is no confusion when ready to reconnect
