Stebel Nautilus Air Horn
Does anyone have some detailed informatiom on installation of this horn.
Re: Stebel Nautilus Air Horn
I finally had the time to install my horn, and it wasn't all that difficult. I removed the tank and the charcoal canister. This left room for routing wiring and mounting the horn using the same mounting bracket as the original. I did away with the vacuum line on the left throttle body and then caped it. The solenoid quick connect was no longer needed so I rapped it with electrical tape and tied it off out of the way. When I ordered the horn from twisted throttle, I also bought the wiring harness set that was ready to go. This made the job a lot easier. I found a good place to mount the relay under the seat. Then took my time and routed the wiring along the frame. The only cutting that I needed to do was on the original wiring to the old horn. This needed two 14-16 gauge female connections so I could plug in from the new wiring harness setup. This connected the stock horn button into the new wiring circuit. At the tank you have two vapor or overflow lines, one reconnects on the right side and the other line that went to the canister, then to a drain on the right side I used existing hose and connections I had left over from the canister to make the connection. The horn does rest against the front brake line but I really don't think it's going to be an issue. This is one hell of a horn !

If you can, how about a few pictures. I'm still waiting for someone to connect a Nautilus to the exsisting horn wires. If the can-bus will allow the amperage to operate the Nautilus horn I don't see the need for all the extra wiring. I did see on another list that the Nautilus pulls 18 amps but the writer didn't say how he came by that number.
Just found out it is 18A: http://www.stebel.it/stebel/index.htm
Now to find out what the stock horn is.

Re: Stebel Nautilus Air Horn
Stock horn won't be more than a few amps.. it's a buzzer.. vs the high current draw on startup of a DC motor. I am running two stock horns on the circuit and that works, but I'm willing to bet more than 10A is gonna turn off the circuit.mogu83 wrote:If you can, how about a few pictures. I just put a horn relay on my bike weekend before last. I'm not particularly proud of the wiring but I am now ready for any horn I choose to mount.

Re: Stebel Nautilus Air Horn
The nautilus comes with the relay required for installation. Buying the ready to use wiring harness makes the job a lot easier. The relay is what breaks the amps down. The cam-bus is no longer in the picture. A 30 amp fuse is supplied with the new wiring harness. The wiring to and from the horn button doesn't see more amps than the original setup would allow due to the relay. All the heavy load is to and from the horn.
Re: Stebel Nautilus Air Horn
I told you guys wrong. The cam-bus is still used and supplies the power through the horn to the relay which then closes the circuit for the new horn.

Re: Stebel Nautilus Air Horn
Lets try to simplify this a bit.. both messages above are confusing to me, so..
The CANBUS controller (FZE module) supplies voltage/current directly to the existing horn. It is capable of working with two horns since the RT used to come with two horns. Mine is proof of that. Dual horns work fine power right off the FZE/horn connection.
A Stebel horn is going to draw too much current (18A) for the FZE. It will probably think something is wrong and shut down the circuit. That's not a good thing to happen with a horn.
Using a relay - you can send the voltage/current from the FZE to the relay COIL - which tells the relay to do it's thing (switch contacts)
The switched contacts on the relay can be used send power from the battery (with a fused lead) off to the horn.
Whenever you press the horn button - the FZE sends voltage/current to the relay which energizes it's coil, pulling the contacts closed which allows voltage/current from the battery to flow to the horn. Result: loud BEEP.
That's as good as I can do with a word picture..
I took the easy way out - dual horns. They seem to get attention. I have a Stebel horn sitting on my workbench, had it on several other bikes. It's nice.. but to me not worth the installation hassle. YMMV as usual.

Re: Stebel Nautilus Air Horn
Easy guys.
My initial question was Has anyone actually tried it? , and it looks like the answer simply put is --No.
I'm well aware of why and when to control a circuit with a relay and how to wire it, in fact I have a half dozen 30Amp Bosch relays and sockets in my tool box (somewhere). I'm also hesitant to add extra wiring to a machine if it isn't necessary, I've seen a couple of bikes go up in flames and a bunch on the side of the road because of someones attempt to improve the factory wiring. Never one of mine BTW.

Re: Stebel Nautilus Air Horn
I just bought a stebel horn kit from Excel Cycle Works:
http://www.excelcyclewerkes.com/index_files/Page318.htm
I picked up the R1150GS kit hoping the mounting bracket included will work, and from looking at the bike, I hope it will.
Installation will happen in the next week and I will try to post back with pictures and comments.

Jeeze Harry - if we didn't get to theorize and postulate and talk about all sorts of things except the answer you wanted - how boring a thread would this be?mogu83 wrote:Easy guys.

It's obvious - it's up to you to do it. If it was me (and it ain't) - I'd first try hooking up a 20W light bulb to the circuit and see if pressing the horn button lights it up - and it stays on. If it does you should be fine with the Stebel horn on the circuit.. but what fun would that be? Facts? Research? DATA?
HA!
BTW - you never replied to my invite for my Birthday Trip to West Virginia next week.. that's OK, I'm not insulted. Much.

I'm not going to cook my can-bus system. That thing looks too much like a Fiber Optic Loop (without a back-up) and I learned that when you touch them you do so very carefully.
As far as your upcoming ride -- I'll be in Buena Vista,Va on the BRP at a Guzzi rally. Going down on Thursday (6/26) and returning week after sometime (I'm retired). We usually end up on Rts 220/219 in W.Virginia, also going to check out Peaks of Otter so I can sent a picture to Cole (NSBMWR) showing no gas station
As you know I'm a long time Guzzi rider and took (and still take) a lot of heat for switching to the R1200R instead of a Norge. Well, I'm still happy I bought the Beemer and I haven't yet met a Norge rider that I couldn't spank in the twisties. That, and the Norges seem to be plagued by all kinds of Guzzi problems. But I did like the sound of that Goose, the only area where the Beemer falls far short.

Re: Stebel Nautilus Air Horn
So you didn't wanna join us in WV on your way down? We leave Monday (staying in Stephens City VA), then head towards Snoeshoe.. Would seem to be right on your way in motorcycle terms (less than 1,000 miles out of the way..)mogu83 wrote:I'm not going to cook my can-bus system. It's OK.. we understand Guzzi addiction. It's an odd thing, but then all motorcycle passions are odd things. I think the Guzzi riders must feel threatened that one of "their own" abandoned the marque - which brings into question their decision to stay with it.As you know I'm a long time Guzzi rider and took (and still take) a lot of heat for switching to the R1200R instead of a Norge. Do Guzzi's have EWS? You can try to make them feel better by telling them all about EWS failures.

Re: Stebel Nautilus Air Horn
I'm just finding this thread and wanted to give a big +1 to the Stebel compact air horn.
I've had mine installed for many months and can't imagine negotiated big city traffic, especially crowded interstates, and very especially lane splitting, without it.
I also can't imagine why anyone would want to bypass the relay: I've always wanted maximum amps available to horns and lights and a relay is the way to do that, plus avoid frying tiny handlebar switches that would have to handle the current with its attendant arcing. But then I'm not an engineer who loves to experiment!
It's really a great feeling to be in the city and, when some cager pulls out without looking, to actually sound like a car instead of a toy. Besides, once the cannister is gone, SOMETHING has to go there!
