Mini DIN plug

Post by Phang »

I have a CTEK XS800 charger at home for my bikes and car. To fully utilize the charger, I ordered a dual cigarette plug a few days ago from the local CTEK distributor for my recently acquired 2002 R1150R

Mr Postman delivered this to me today.

With the red adaptor ring on, it is a cigarette socket plug.

With the red adaptor ring off, it is a mini DIN plug.

Plugged and clicked into the mini DIN accessories socket on the beemer, it fits perfectly.

Phang

I see that you have good taste, couldn't help notice the Kyocera knive next to the package. I worked in Tokyo for the better part of 11 months and bought a set at Carre 4. Love them......

Hi Boxer,

Mine was bought in Tokyo as well, much cheaper than the price at my local store.

A mate of mine just questioned me about the 12V socket having voltage output even when the key is at the OFF position. Is the socket hard-wired to the battery terminals without any switch in between in R1150R?

Yes, unswitched (always hot) through a 15 amp fuse in the fuse block which also supplies the clock. I believe it's the third fuse from the left hand side in the row of fuses .

You have nice taste in VOM's as well!

I bought the VOM at an unbelievable low price. The local technical school students here will put their school subsidized VOM for sale online after a few use, probably they need a MP3 player or a fancy cell phone more than the VOM.

Thanks for confirming the socket is unswitched. Now, I have read the myths and facts of a BMW gel battery online. With the claim “Suitable for all types of 12v lead-acid batteries (inc GEL & AGM)” from CTEK, I am still hesitate in plugging the charger to the bike. My other bikes and car lead-acid maintenance free batteries had good result using the charger but GEL is something new to me.

When I had the socket installed I asked the same question, the electrician at he BMW service place told me that the socket is live when the key is off but only for charging, somehow the circuit is protected (other than the fuse)... Fact or Fiction ??
