Brass Throttle Body Screw Stuck!

Post by DocBlasto »

The left-side throttle body screw (big brass one that you use to adjust the airflow) is frighteningly jammed. The right-side turns freely, but I stripped out the left one something fierce trying to get it free.

I didn't go at it half-dingle. I used a wide, crisp flathead screwdriver. I saturated it in WD-40 and left it for hours. I used a hammer to tap the edge of the screwhead in different directions, hoping it would jolt free. I pushed very hard for traction... got it to budge a tiny bit clockwise, but not at all counterclockwise. I'm thinking my only shot at this point might be to carefully drill out the slot much deeper (with a series of holes) or use a tiny dremel bit to create a deep channel that the screwdriver might fit WAY into. I wonder if my throttle body is warped?

Has anyone else had this happen? I think I'm going to pull the throttle body, remove all electronic parts, and soak it in penetrating oil. Any other ideas?

Sounds like it is time for drastic measures. Apply heat to expand the throttle body, then give it a tap with a impact driver. Don't beat it, usually a good solid tap with an impact driver will loosen a stuck screw. 10 minutes in a 350 degree oven should do it, make sure all the pieces that are not metal are removed before putting the TB in the oven. Also make sure that the driver tip fits the screw head tightly, and that the bit is loaded against the screw in the direction you want it to turn. if you haven't used an impact driver before, you might practice on a few other screws first, they do take a certain technique to use properly.

WD-40 is not a penetrating fluid, and it not even a very good lubricant! Try a penetrant like PB Blaster or Nuts-Off, or my personal favorite when all else fails, ZEP-45. Spay it with this stuff a couple times a day for three or four days if you have too, and tap lightly on the part with a small plastic hammer, even tapping lightly on a screwdriver engaged in the slot of the BBAS, with the idea of just working the penetrant into the threads, not actually trying budge the screw loose until the stuff has had a chance to work. Then go after it with big flat screwdriver like you mean it.

Whatever you do, don't panic and be patient. The threads are aluminum alloy and weaker than the brass screw.....easy on the heat as well. Once is well soaked, I would try screwing in and out small quantities, until you work it out.

I always advise owners to take out the BBS (Big Brass Screws), lean the thread ofboth the scrfew and the TB , wipe the tip and lubricate the o-ring. Never have encountered a problem like yours....hard to turn, yes, but stuck.....no.

Best of luck....... [-o< [-o<

Boy, that doesn't sound to good. I hate to rain on your parade but it sounds like you may have gauled or stripped threads. I wish you good luck. If they are I wonder if you could put a helicoil in the TB to repair it.
