Why only one key?
Just a guess: bring your VIN, registration, and suitable identification down to your local BMW dealer.
Where are you located?

When you get your new key....get the dealership to cut a few copies of it....just in case. Pretty cheap insurance.

I lost mine a while back and was lucky enough to find the spare.

I'm interested in how this turns out; I lost my second key, and went to the dealer to get another spare. They took my original and cut me a copy (I was expecting them to take my VIN, but they didn't.) The copy worked in my helmet lock, but not in the ignition. The tech tried to muscle the key around until I made him stop. It was his contention that there was something wrong with my ignition lock, and my opinion that their key-copier was a thousandth off.

Where do you get an accurately-cut key based on the VIN?

Well, this morning I drove the 80 miles to our nearest dealership with registration and Driver's lic. in hand, only to find out that BMW "NO LONGER KEEPS THE KEY REGISTRATIONS ON THE ROCKSTER AVAILABLE TO THE DEALERSHIPS!!!!"... ok, so the guy did fess up and it was he that I spoke with last week that told me they COULD do the key, so I guess that's worth something. BUT do you think he gave me a break on the purchase of an oil filter? Hell no! So where does that put me...waiting till in the morning when a local locksmith is going to come to my house and attempt to make the ignition key. We'll see how that goes. More to come...

Oh s#!t.
Suddenly it sounds like if I want to have more than one key, I have to replace the ignition lock, the helmet lock and re-shim both side bags.
That's not good.

I suppose I could just replace the ignition lock, and carry a different key for the helmet lock and the side bags...
Still not good. What a lousy policy! #-o

When I bought my Rockster I only had one key. I went to a local shop who cut keys and had two made for £10 (20 of those dollar things) Don't bother with a dealer !!

The saga comes to a happy conclusion...the locksmith guy was able to fashion a key that works all of the components. Took him about 15 mins, then went to his van and cut a second key which also works well. Interestingly, the keys that he made do not have the small plastic head but instead he used blanks that have a large metal head with the inscription "for BMW"...must be generic. I picked up an OEM "plastic head" key from the dealership yesterday and will have to take it to the locksmith shop to get it cut because it is a stainless steel key and they tell me it takes special equipment to cut it. Also, the locksmith visit cost me $60 with the two keys (not $75 like I was quoted) all in all pretty acceptable. After all, I'd rather pay someone who used a bit of artistry or craftsmanship to complete the job than pay BMW $75(!) to have someone look it up on a computer. But the point is moot, I have paid the price for being a dumbass and will never be caught short of keys again.
Thanks for your help!

When i got my R, it only had the one key!

I had 2 more cut cut at the local shoe repair place. I put one with all the other spare keys at home and the other i have 'hidden' securely on the bike!!

That spares not much good at home when you loose a key out on a ride.. don't ask how i learnt that lesson
