18" or 20" Cee Bailey?
I've been lurking these boards and have read all that exists (I think) on windscreens. My R1200R has the sport screen which I love - I like being in the air. But, during winter and long slab rides, I'd like the option of more protection. I finally decided to go the Cee Bailey route - got the BMW bracket. Now, I can't make a decision on whether to go with the 18" or 20" Cee Bailey. I'm 6 feet tall, 32" inseam, I have the high seat option on my R. For looks, I'd rather have the 18" - but if I'm going to get a larger screen, I'd rather not get one that puts airflow at the wrong spot. I know I won't know till I try it - and that's partly why I went the Cee Bailey route - if I hate what I get, I can eBay it and get the other I guess. I'd rather save the hassle and money.
So, any thoughts? I'm leaning towards the 18" now - mainly because I think it will look better on the bike than the 20" and 18" will certainly give me better wind protection than the sport screen I have now.
I know the boards probably don't need yet another windscreen post, but that's how undecided I am at the moment. Thanks for any input.

I'm the same height and inseam and have the 20" and high seat. The wind hits right at the very top of my helmet. I would think that the 18" would put the wind at your forehead or face shield. I have the smoked screen with my crystal gray and think it looks good.
Re: 18" or 20" Cee Bailey?
DJ,
I have the 20" Cee Bailey windscreen. I have a 30" inseam with the middle height seat. I derived the height of my screen based on where the wind hit my face shield at speed (75 MPH). My R1200R came with the tall wind screen and, at speed, the wind hit my face shield about mid shield. The 20" screen, according to Cee Bailey, is 5" taller than the tall screen which placed the wind just above the face shield, actually right on the NOLAN letters on my helmit which works well for me. You may want a taller screen based on your height and the taller seat. I wanted some wind on the helmit to make sure I would get some air over the venting system on the top of the helmit.
The screen works just fine keeping the air off of my chest and most of my arms. If I get any buffeting it is not noticeable, by me anyway. I can turn my head at speed and not have my neck wrenched...and that is a good thing!
Good luck on your choice of windshield heights.

I'm totally different height, (5'7", 28" inseam), have the low seat and use an 18 inch Cee Bailey. Wind hits right above the chin but it's smooth air, blocks the wind off my chest but my arms are in the wind. The nicest thing for me about the Cee Bailey is it smoothed the airflow out and even at 70 or 80 if you look at the windshield it doesn't flutter or move at all (I have the tall BMW mount). Very solid, quality piece that does what it is supposed to (YMMV).

So question for you stogiepuffer, as I am considering a windscreen and about the same height, with the 18" screen are you looking over the windscreen or though it?
Appreciate it - thanks!

I'm not stogiepuffer... but I have all 3 Cee-Bailey and am roughly the same size. None of them will require you to look though them. The largest (20") does cause more wind reaction from the bike than the smaller ones, but also offers the best protection. None are turbulence free (and no one has reported ANY shield on the R12R that is AFAIK..) I have all 3 because I like different sizes for different weather, and it only takes about 5 minutes to swap them out. I also have an adjustable shield on at the moment (a modified VarioScreen) that I may start playing with a wedge at the top to reduce the turbulence..

I easily look over it, don't have to move my head around to adjust for the screen. It looks as though the 20 inch one would be easy to look over also but since I don't have one, I don't know. But for me right now this one works fine. I will soon be getting a new helmet so that may affect things also, we'll see.

BTW - anyone in the NJ area who wants to try a selection of screens - if you have the "Tall" or "Touring" BMW mount, feel free to ping me. We can arrange an afternoon where you can come over to my house and have'at'm.. try one after the other and see what works for you. Would be lots less expensive than my technique..

Thanks for the comments - I ordered a 20" - I'll let you all know how it works out. I think it makes sense to go for the most protection since I continue to have the option of putting the sport screen back on - and I'm certain I'll use that most of time with the Sacramento heat.

Speaking of an 18" Cee Baily's windshield, I have one for sale. It was on the bike for approximately 75 miles. They are $159.00 new; I'll accept a reasonable offer.

Re: 18" or 20" Cee Bailey?
My 20" Cee Bailey's windshield came yesterday - I replaced the BMW touring shield and rode the bike to work this morning (some of which is on a freeway, so I had a chance to run the bike up to 70+mph). After installing it I thought it might be a bit too high - after riding it I realize that it's just the right height.
Much better than any R12R windscreen I've tried to date. I do wish it was a tad bit wider, but so far (12 miles), I like it.
MTF,

MTF,
How tall are you?
Thinking about getting the Cee Bailey's 20 inch also.
I'm 6' - 1", inseam of about 34 inches..

I'm 5'10" w/ a 30" inseam. If I was your height, I sure wouldn't want anything any shorter.

Re: 18" or 20" Cee Bailey?
Windshields, pain in the neck for me!
I've the BMW tall screen and the protection is ok but too much turbulence over my helmet. The air flow is hitting directly on the middle of my face shield causing a very loud noise.
I followed some precious advice of Deilemberger and I prepared some "mask" with heavy card board to see which height was more suitable for me
It came out that neither of the existing commercial windshields would avoid the turbulence
so I'll try to manufacture one out of a good plexiglas plate
If I'll succed I'll post some pictures.

Does anyone have one of the frames or mounting brackets that the C Baileys and large BMW windshield fits for sale?

Re: 18" or 20" Cee Bailey?
Mark, I've got a virtually new mounting frame for the BMW Touring/Cee Bailey shield. Come to think of it I also have the Touring shield and Cee Bailey 20" shield going spare. Like many others I have tried all sorts of screens. Currently I'm back using the Wudo slimline (not the one with small fairing) shield and find this works best for me. I don't know yet what shipping from the UK to US would be but it might still work out better than buying new. I think I'll stick with my Wudo now. Once I finally figured that the wind protection would never be as good as my RT, whatever shield I used I'm much more relaxed about the whole screen thing. IMHO the bike more than compensates for the reduced wind protection in terms of lightness, handling and good looks.

Mark,
Try this
http://www.wuedo.de/cgi-bin/webseller?a ... start.html
There are two references there to the "Slimline". The first is the shield itself, the second is the mounting frame and you'll see pictures for both. In my opinion this is the best looking shield of all the options. The shield itself is in two parts and total height is about 18.5" from the top of the headlight to the top of the shield. It is adjustable in rake and does a pretty good job. The wind blast is just a little bit more than the Cee Bailey 20" but the turbulence is less. The quality is first class German build but you pay for the priviledge. The screen is 145 Euros (about US$223) and the mounting is 132 Euros (about US$203) then postage on top. In total it cost me, including shipping from Germany to the UK about £250 or US$500. So far I haven't seen anyone here (apart from me) try it.

Re: 18" or 20" Cee Bailey?
Mark,
That web link should take you to the page with the shield but for some reason it keeps going back to the Wudo home page. No matter. At the home page click on "motorcycle models". Then find "R1200R" and click on that. Its on the third page of the model list. Then scroll down the list of accessories (in German) until you get to number 46. Click on that and on the page that comes up scroll down to the two items with "slimline in the title". The first is the screen (s) and the second is the mounting hardware. Hope this helps.
