R1200R Loan Bike

X (main dealer) have leant me an almost new black R1200R to splash my way home and then to work on.
First impression is that it is very light compared to my own R1150R and felt like a 250cc trail bike in its ability to squeeze through the traffic queues for about six miles though the city 'rush hour'. How can you american guys not be allowed to do this? I'd have been dead from exposure and a 40 minute trip would have taken two hours if I had sat in the l o n g tailbacks?

Once the traffic cleared the small screen was not big enough and my chest soon became cold. Was glad to get in a bath and also dry the leathers off.

Drier today, but still around 3°C, so hope to have a more pleasurable trip over the moors back to the main dealer in Y (up north).

The large oil cooler behind the front wheel, getting spattered with the road salt, is still the silliest idea ever. Even if I had a large lottery win I could not stand such an obvious mistake.Is this a real problem?

well u know my man --form follows function,,, maximum cooling effect for an oil cooler--- from an enigineers perspective you have to hang it out in the wind somewhere. rather have the cooler there--than not at all--- to me as a wrench an a pretty good one at that-- i think an oil cooler is as vital as a starter. they are in fact-- that effective in longevity..,,, friction kills. bout 7 more days till delivery of me 08 r 12------- yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee hawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

It seems to work.
I also was very sceptical about the oil cooler position.
But the first 10000 km have shown no problem.
And I have not heard of anybody having had a problem there.
So the only thing about the cooler is that it is somewhat ugly....

Had a look at lunchtime and the radiator has got brown road slurry right through it. A mixture of road salt , normal field run off and cow muck does not bode well for longevity and looks. The GS has the radiator much higher- a better solution IMHO.

Must be a bit odd then - mine had none of this in 12,000 miles of riding. I did see ChiTown had a bit from his off-road excursions.

If it's a worry - NippyNorman in the UK sells a FendaExtenda from Pyramid Plastics.. I installed one on my bike just to keep muck off the bottom of the engine (I've had no problems with the oil cooler..) Dunno the UK cost - the US cost for it was around $30 or so, high price, but it's for my bike so who cares?

Do get ready to be very disappointed in your R1150R when you get back on it. The loaner may be a bit damaging to your wallet..

6 miles of traffic queues!...I remember them once a long time ago .............Over 9k miles on my 1200R and have never had to stop for too long in any traffic queue cos we have big long and wide open roads ....oh,and I did I say that it was 80F here today

.....filtering through traffic, splitting lanes in NOT illigal everywhere in USA....I live in California and it's very legal here.....although some ass**** get pissed off that you are moving when they are standing in traffic and try to cut you off on purpose.....some education and on a rare occasion a boot in the door (only when they are about to hit you) straightens them out:-)

The older bike feels more of a tourer. I felt the same when I swapped from my K75.

Got a fender extender and a mud flap on my bike but the UK road grot still hits the alternator belt cover- rather that than a radiator though.

If the oil cooler radiator is ever moved a la GS I might consider changing.
