I know my mountain bike uses mineral oil in the Shimano disk brake system.

I have no idea if the Shimano mineral oil would be compatible with the BMW clutch system.

It would be interesting to know if these mineral oil systems are compatible.

Without giving it any thought whatsoever I thought it was brake fluid.

It's definitely not brake fluid. Brake fluid is not an oil, put a drop between your fingers someday and see how non-slippery it is.

But I've never thought of an alternative to the official BMW mineral oil. I was vaguely planning to buy some from BMW after the warranty ran out, but it's not something I was planning to carry with me on the road. Keep us posted if you find an aftermarket source.

And, while we're on the subject, what exactly does "mineral oil" mean? Not animal and not vegetable? Are silicone oils mineral oils because they're made from sand? Are petroleum oils not because they come from dead dinosaurs?

Byproduct..

"Mineral oil or liquid petrolatum is a by-product in the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline. It is a transparent, colorless oil composed mainly of alkanes (typically 15 to 40 carbons) [1] and cyclic paraffins, related to white petrolatum. Mineral oil is a substance of relatively low value, and it is produced in very large quantities. Mineral oil is available in light and heavy grades, and can often be found in drug stores."

Can also be used as a laxative - so.. if you're feeling bloated.. and on the road..

Does anyone know if the clutch cap on our bikes is the same one used on the GS models?

I was at my local & freindly dealer (A-J 's in Gill Ma.) yesterday & purchased a bottle of affore mentioed hyd.clutch mineral oil...$7.00 for maybe 4oz maybe ,no part # haz-mat labeling or even volume info on said bottle!!!It has a neutral odor ,at least to my damaged oleo-factory senses & I can now ride w/the comfort of knowing that in a pinch I'll be "a regular guy" Well almost any way
