The new 1200 GS does have different hand guards to the previous 1200. The inboard mounting now attaches to a clamp which goes around the handlebar instead of a bracket mounted to the lever housing. At least this is the case over here in the UK. The clamp is designed for the GS handlebars so looks as though it would be too wide for the smaller diameter handlebars on the R.

Did you try Chicago BMW, http://www.ascycle.com, bob's BMW, Gina's BMW, or putting in a request at IBMWR.org?

Hard to believe they would discontinue a popular accessory from last years model. Stranger thing have happened I guess....

Gary,

I asked at my dealer here in the UK about the hand guards the other day. They told me that they couldn't get the GS guards that fit our bikes any more. Something about BMW having stopped their production. If you damaged one on an '06 GS I guess you'd need to fit the '08 guard which is a different colour on top and attached differently on the inboard side. I don't think having two different guards on the bike would look very good. Seems strange that you can't get the old style any more when you can still get parts for Beemers going back decades. Very strange indeed.

Rich,

Yeah, that's the same story I heard. It looks like I'll be trying to fab some of my own. If they come out nice I'll post here for others to make.

Good folks, at least over the phone. Maybe they have them or can find a set.

I called my BMW parts guru in Raleigh. He confirmed that the GS Handguard "kit" (the PN listed above) is "no longer available" - it's shown as "NLA" on the GS Parts Fiche.

He did say, however, that you can still buy the individual parts by going thru the fiche and buying each part separately. If I ride up to Raleigh this weekend, I may take a look and see what it would cost to buy the individual parts.
