2003 R1150R road trip spare parts list
I am leaving, for as far as Panama, very soon. I have metal gas connects ,tire repair, pump, fuses, bulbs, oil filter and my tools pretty much packed. Thought I'd ask what else such as alternator belt that may be on the outa have list. I have my dealer and shop list written down too. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Fantastic! Will you put together a blog where we can follow your adventures?
There are three things that I would also bring with me:
1) A GSM phone with 3 or 4 bands, especially 850, 900 and 1900 (from Cingular, ATT, Nextel, or T-mobile)
2) A PocketPC with GPS and OzieExplorerCE
3) A spare FD bearing.

Spare parts list and Trip report
I always carry the "book" and I have all the dealers and shops listed in the back for Mexico and Central America. I have read all the stuff in both BMW clubs mags thats been written about the final drives and I too had to replace the O-ring and large seal on my former R1100R, but in the interest of space I'm not sure how many parts I want to haul. It is not an unreasonable idea to be "stuck" waiting on a part ,in some warm, scenic place down there, and I'm not going off road either.
As for the request to post a trip report, I will after I return, with noteworthy pictures and some captions and this will be to the http://www.advrider.com web site . I t will appear under "trip Reports" and probably be sometime in late Feb /early March after returning. If you have not been on that site you are missing much when it comes to bikes and travel, etc. It isn't brand conscious, but has much to offer. An example of the level of activity is a post by Glen Hegstad , the guy that wrote " Terror on Two Wheels", earned 1.4 MILLION hits! I lurk there in regional forums-"Outer Darkness",Trip Reports and other spots. The BMW RA site is a waste BTW and I still find this site a very good one , even though the advrider site is far and away the best when it comes to USA and world travel. It is a bit uncivilized at times -to include myself!
As far as the GPS and phone-I use computers all the time and bought a GPS and sold it a week later-I am GPS challenged or something-I see there utility, esp for off road but they are too much techno and I'll stick with a map! I even taught a forestry class using a whole box of GPS's a couple of years ago and still after reading the owners manual during ball game breaks-boxed it and sold it... I will use email to communicate -it's readily available all over Central America and Mexico. I have a new Aerostitch water bottle holder mtd where you have your GPS-go figure...

As far as guns go, it is my understanding that firearms chambered for 'military calibers', i.e., 9mm, .45 ACP, etc., are strictly forbidden in Mexico and probably in other countries south of here. If you feel the need, pick something 'civilian', like a .22 and you will have a better chance if questioned about it.

Panama hat?
Is the idea of a Panama hat taken to Panama on a space challenged motorcycle trip an example of British wit? BTW- on advrider someone posted a picture of the sign @ the border stating "guns= prison" in s few more words...

Re: Panama hat?
As can be seen from this picture from ADVRIDER no self respecting motor cycle rider in Panama should be without his hatkantuckid wrote:Is the idea of a Panama hat taken to Panama on a space challenged motorcycle trip an example of British wit? To Dr. Strangelove and all. Rather than a flashlight, I got rid of it and bought and packed one of those LED headlamps. There are a number of newer types that don't cost too much, they last a LONG time on small (AAA) batteries. Typically, they have three brightness settings and a swivel (up/down).
I now even use it for general maintenance tasks. Think about it, if you need to work on your bike, night or day, you will have light on whatever you are working on - with BOTH hands free!

These are great for pitching your tent after dark and the batteries last for ages.

The hat is pretty cool but I hate hats and only wear a ball cap when fishing, farming, etc.. Since the gun subject came up I thought I'd mention a response to my thread on http://www.advrider.com-the guy is apparently a lawyer and said a person had 3 shells/cartridges that he had forgot were lying on the backseat of his car-they got him a trip to the Mexican jail and it cost $3,000 to get him released! Yes, you read that figure correctly!

While in Mexico don't stray too much from the beaten path....because of the "bandidos".
If you have to make night, don't leave the bike outside, or with your belongings on it......it's prey for the "ladrones", they will pick it appart.
The rest of the trip is very enjoyable, stick close to the Pacific rim.
Good luck and post some pics.......

actually exactly what I was thinking of, I have the cheap, non malleable one, bought at the checkout counter. The original batts are still cooking. Yours sounds better, but bigger?dnat928 wrote:To Dr. Strangelove and all. Rather than a flashlight, I got rid of it and bought and packed one of those LED headlamps.
