a difficult decision . . .

Post by tor1150r »

Well....I traded in my 04 R for an 07 GS (granite/grey)
My last ride on the black steed is tomorrow to drop it off at the dealer for the last time.

The factors that contributed to this decision are:

- my trans shaft failed twice. I'm not 100% confident it won't happen again (they never did pin-point the cause). This is the main reason for looking at other bikes and brands even though BMW has looked after me well on both instances.

- the recent performance of the CAD$ has caused price reductions across the line (including the R12R).

- additional discount for a repeat BMW customer.

- the R1200R, IMHO, is less suited for 2-up trips then the 1150R - and I do a lot of these.

- BMW gave me an attractive trade-in against my R , even with 70k km on the clock, and the shaft history of this particular bike.

I love the R. It has carried my butt 70 km. 69k of it in sheer riding bliss. It carried my wife and I across Canada twice as well as dozens of weekend trips. It will be missed. But we'll have different adventures on the GS starting this spring when I take delivery.

This board has been the most informative and entertaining of the few I frequent and participate on. I look to this board before consulting with dealers.

I'll keep popping on to read what the members have to say about the R and the sport in general. Hopefully I can also pipe in on some posts to share my R experience with other R riders.

Cheers all

Post some pics of both the old an dnew bikes. It sounds like a good move. I would like to get some of those Canadian $ on a 1:1 ratio right now.

R1200GS=Good choice when R1200R isn't right for 1 reason or another.
I'd get it with the mag wheels and no ABS.

Hope you will enjoy the ride. I'm sure you will. I hope to not have any of the problems you had either.
If I do the F800GS looks pretty tasty!! :)

Dang, just when I think I got the 'new bike' bug out of my system, I read a post about someone getting a new bike. It's a good thing the 1200GS is a little too tall for me, or the bug would be getting the best of me again.

Congratulations and yes, post pics soon.

The F800GS is looking interesting, if it sits lower than the R12GS.
Traffic signals timed for 35mph, are also timed for 70mph.

I dropped the R off yesterday. A buddy of mine (ST1300 rider) is interested in a GS. I arranged to meet him at the dealer and take a test ride. It was 3 degrees C, but the sun was out. The dealer gave us a GS and an R12R to ride.

That was my first time on the R1200R. Wow . .. what a difference!

The increased power is definitely noticeable, as is the transmission. Ergos are also different. Although I was only on it for about 40 minutes (mix of highway and city) I think I liked the 1150 better. The 1150 seems more comfortable even though it weighs more. It also felt a little more 'luxurious' to ride. Still...the R12R just wasn't it for me.

Below is the R (traded) and the GS (waiting til April)

With your past experience with the splines is best to move on. You will be quite surprised with the GS.....is lighter ~ 60 pounds has a bit more power and just does a lot of things a touch better than the R.

You can play off road too......congrats and enjoy that baby......

I wouldn't play off-road with it too much...Unless you have arms like Popeye or are always with someone who has arms like Popeye.
