Checking the oil

Nubie question: Do I check the oil when the engine is hot or cold? If I check it when cold, the glass is half full. If I check it when hot it's only down maybe 1/8".

Also, is there a special tool to remove the oil filler cap? I used a screw driver and hammer which worked well enough but it seems a little crude.

I got an oil port opener with the bike in the tool bag. I got little else but I did get that. Later I bought a cool little tool that opens beers and oil ports.

Where does one find such a universal tool????

The tool should be in a tool bag, with a few torx drivers (for removing turnsignal and headlight for bulb replacement) and not much else. It's black plastic. You'll recognize it when you see it.. if you don't see it ask the dealer where your tool kit is.

For oil level - if it's above the center dot - hot or cold - it's just fine. It will read a bit higher when hot due to the expansion of the oil. Happily - another perfect bit on the Roadster is there isn't the ritual for an oil check that the lesser models need (with oil coolers located above the engine.)

My level hasn't moved in about 6,000 miles now.. Mine stopped using oil at 3,700 miles after a spirited ride through the mountains of West Virginia with lots of downhill engine braking used.

Thanks for the replies. I'll get one of those gizmos from Sierra. They're great people to deal with. Interesting that your bike stopped using oil, Don. Why do you suppose? Has that happened to anybody else?

3500 miles and no change in my oil level.

I suspect mine stopped because I broke it in pretty much by the book, and then did the final ring seating in a great environment that required continual changes in throttle and on/off the throttle (with lots of engine braking being used..)

If you're anywhere near the east coast of the US.. I'd really suggest West Virginia 33/28/66/219 for finalizing the break-in of your bike.
