Charcoal canister..

Anyone know exactly what the plumbing on the canister is?

It appears - the hose coming down the right side of the bike under the tank is the tank vent hose (if I blow into it - it builds up pressure, and when I stop - it releases the pressure - along with gas fumes.) That hose connects to the center fitting on the top of the canister.

The hose from the vacuum valve (that opens to let engine vacuum suck out fumes from the canister) is fairly obvious - it's the large hose that goes to the bottom of the canister.

Question one is - the 3rd hose on the canister, that disappears back along under the left side of the tank... anyone know what that hose is - or where it goes?

It would seem there should only be the two hoses going to the canister - one from the tank vent, and one going to the vacuum switch (which then connects up to the right side throttle body vacuum port.) Can't figure out what the 3rd hose is - and where it goes.

I have mine out at the moment - took it out to get at the preload adjuster on my front shock (the HyperPro) - and I managed to break off the small nipple on the top - where the mystery hose goes. I'm waiting for the JBWeld to harden before putting it back in..

There sure is a LOT of room there once the canister is removed. If I had to guess - there is enough room there to mount a Strebel compact airhorn - which actually could be nicely mounted using the stamped steel mount that holds the charcoal canister.

Not that I'd ever do something like that.. probably..

If anyone has a diagram of what the hoses are - it would be a very useful thing. The BMW repair DVD has absolutely nothing on it about what the hoses for the R1200R - and what I could find (R1200RT) never explains what the hoses actual functions are.

BTW - our Euro friends - did they finally fit the canister on euro bikes? I know the R1150 bikes only got it in the USA..

Hoses, cables and wiring... why would BMW think that we would EVER need to know that kind of stuff?

That actually makes about as much sense as using alien butts for seat design!

LOL! I was just thinking the same thing the other day. I plan to ditch the canister and do exactly that.

IF one was going to do that - it looks to me - like the metal bracket for the charcoal canister is just begging for a small modification to mount a Stebel horn. Looks like one hole drilled in it for the Stebel bolt and it would make a dandy mount for the horn.

Not that I know anything about that or would ever even think of doing it (warranty 'ya know..)

'duh.. It's always the obvious things that get me.

Mine is still in front shock preload adjusting mode without the canister - I blocked off the vacuum line from the vacuum control valve, and connected the two other lines together (tank vent to canister overflow drain - which goes down to the left side near the footpeg).. and it seems quite happy this way. Perhaps someday I'll be satisifed that I've found the perfect shock adjustment and put it back on.. or not. That's if my Strebel air horn doesn't end up taking it's place.
