quick disonnect failure - need quick help

Post by GJBushman »

While replacing my battery one of my quick disconnects failed and I can no longer use it. I will order a suitable metal replacement disconnect but in the meantime I need a repair so I can get back on the bike. What am I looking for when putting in a straight piece with clamps? What is the hose diameter and can I get the correct length in just a single fitting or do I need a longer piece of tubing? Thanks for your help gurus.

No guru here, but I believe its a 5/16th inner diameter fuel line. Try to get a 3" brass straright pipe with opposing bards. Do a search for "quick disconnects" and see a thread names "QD Failure? Not me. . .!" (Sorry, but I don't know how to attached the thread to this reply). It's got some good pictures and explanations of the problems you're now having and good solutions.

Good Luck. BMW QDs suck!

5/16 connector

Post by GJBushman »

Thanks for pointing out that thread. Unfortunately the 5/16 connector is not available at my local Home Depot. 5/16 ID is not a popular size. Can't find any tubing that size either. I'll keep looking.

The fuel line is 8mm x 12mm, which converts to about 5/16" ID by about 1/2" OD. Since the QD (and any replacement) needs to go inside the hose, you need a piece of tubing with a 5/16" OD. Try a plumbing supply store or your local hardware store. Ideally, you'd like a barbed fitting but any tubing will work. You could also go through the plumbing parts bin at Home Despot - you almost certainly will find something that fits. I'm sure you know that you should use FI clamps, not the standard worm-gear type hose clamps.
If you're planning on using Omega QDs for the permanent fix, they ship very quickly; I got mine 2 days after ordering.

solved

Solved. Found some brass nylon fuel line unions at NAPA. They worked out great.

They are designed to fit in the inside diameter of 3/8 nylon fuel line (see pakaging), which I assume is an OD measurement. They fit into the 5/16 inside diameter of the 1150R fuel just fine, not too snug. Could have been a bit longer but I have plenty of clamping room. Not completely road tested but I'm not expecting any problems.
