Mods to my R12R

Post by Caroanbill »

At last I seem to have mastered the technology ... (well, not really, I can't get images to come up in the post despite the Img button)

Lookee here:

Verholen bar-backs - verrrrry neat
http://picasaweb.google.com.au/billstan ... 1741527634

Suburban Machinery Lower footpegs - left side out to clear sidestand
http://picasaweb.google.com.au/billstan ... 7446560322

Homemade Oil Cooler Screen - from this angle you can't tell I can't wrench!
http://picasaweb.google.com.au/billstan ... 6454917730

Overall bar to pegs relationship - notice how much further back the bars are from the screen - this is truly comfy! OEM Cylinder protectors in shot too.
http://picasaweb.google.com.au/billstan ... 8956371442

You've seen the rear hugger on Mark's bike .. same as!

Wilbbers shocks look - well - stock, except the preload is now out on the left passenger footpeg strut (no pics yet)

Kathy's Journey designs inner bags (cheaper and better than OEM)

Front view - your can just tell the headlight protector is on
http://picasaweb.google.com.au/billstan ... 1197575890

Arty shot front 3/4 .. oh yeah, rhs of the SM peg kit is just in shot .. and if you peer you can see the Kaoko cruise (easier to use than Throttlemeister or Wunderlich) - and that's a small magnteic tankbag (just temporary)
http://picasaweb.google.com.au/billstan ... 9328658754

Still to come:
- Bags and topcase are being painted now ...
- Quicklock tang bag is waiting on the lower mount (fuel cap replacement);
- Parabellum screen is on its way;
- Wunderlich lower protectors are coming too.

Wondering if ...
- Sargent seat

Cool stuff Bill. Do the lower footpegs hit during hard cornering?

Mark, I'm definitely not the person to ask! I just don't push it that hard ...

FWIW, I've had no issues when heeled over - my "chicken strips" are about 1" wide on my Metzler Z6 rear tyre.

Verholen bar-backs

Post by Simon »

The Verholen bar-backs do look great. :) I quite like the idea of a more upright riding position. How easy are they to fit? Do they require any re-routing/replacing of cables/pipes etc? Are they available in the UK and where from?

Many thanks

I have a question about the bar risers as well.

I have a pair that I fitted last week but it seemed to me that the cables were far to tight on a full steering lock so rather than risk damage, I took the risers off.......what are you thoughts?

The risers appear to have tightened the cables a bit. Notice in the pics they seemed pulled and tight. Maybe just the angle? I'd like to put them on also, but looking at the cables on my bike, they are tight already.
Ahh the bikes I've ridden. So many bikes, so little time!

Chitown(Joe) has a set of risers,(I do not know the brand), and I rode it, and they are nice. Check with him. For my Roadster, I just cut the zip ties on the bars, and good to go.

Dealer fitted them - he says no problems, and the cables don't appear too tight (I haven't ridden the bike without the bar-backs). The 'bars are straight ahead in that pic, and the stiffness in the s/steel lines makes them look a little tight. The throttle cable goes "behind" the top yoke anyway, rather than through it - if anything, its route seems a little shorter. Everything else seems fine.

Bar-backs on my old R1150RS pulled the cables tighter, and still never gave me a problem - you can worry overmuch about all this. BMW Australia were neurotic about the R1150RS (EVOII brakes, so you can understand why). This dealer is less nervous about these issues than the previous dealer, but they will still say "we wouldn't do (whatever)": I assume that, if they though there was an issue, they'd have said so.

It's hard to tell from pics and the Verholen site, but the angle of the top yoke itself (it isn't horizontal) means these items move the 'bars more BACK than UP (I didn't necessarily want much UP. This angle means a straight riser would also move bars back somewhat.

I got these direct from MV Verholen - local distributor thought they'd be too expensive if he handled them as well. The mail despatcher was friendly and courteous - just bit vague generally, barely functional in written english and so made some basic mistakes (fixed by email before despatch). Still, make sure you are VERY clear (and succinct) in your instructions!

Your post prompted me to re look at my bar mounts which I removed because I thought the cables were too tight.

I have the SW Motech brand which looks very similar to yours.

Managed to get some much needed slack out of the break and clutch cables by loosening the two screws which hold the levers and sliding them half an inch or so along the bars from the grips (rather than be slid against the grips)...There was also a small electrical clip holding the clutch cable which I removed and gave me even more slack.......so now I have my much needed bar risers fitted.....Thanks :smt023

Verholen's

Post by danstl »

I installed the Verholen's on my bike and thought the brake cable was too tight. I special ordered one 1 1/2 inches longer than standard and put it on....all is good now.

You don't want the cables too tight, particularly the brake cable.

The bar backs make a big differenct in comfort. You can get pretty much the same thing with the Touring Wellness bars which I've had on previous RR's, and the whole thing looks cleaner with them.

Bar backs

Post by TAG-Caver »

Just got back from a great ride. Temps hitting 50 at the end of the year is a treat in this neck of the woods! After the ride I noticed that my lower right boltcap on my handlebars had a black mark and thought it was grease, but it turned out it was from the throttle cable. The cable had a grey mark from the grey plastic cap(SW-Motech barbacks). I put a piece of electrical tape on the throttle cable in the rub area for extra protection. If you've installed barbacks or risers you should check for rub points caused by the handlebar repositioning.

Good tip.. You can also put a piece of clear fuel line or surgical hose over the cables to prevent rubbing. Simply slit it down the middle, slip it over the cable/hose, and presto - protection (sometimes I'll put a small dab of clear silicone on the bottom side to keep the piece I added from slipping.

Perhaps a bit less noticable than tape.
