GPS tracks/motorcycle rides

Post by R4R&R »

I've been working on a way to display my GPS tracks from motorcycle rides onto live maps. Google Maps has an API available for this purpose. After some internet digging and trial and error testing, I finally have an easy way to crank these out. Here are a few to get started:

Last weekend I went on a camping trip with some other R1150R.net riders. 30 hours and 385 miles: http://www.lintners.org/rides/gpx_loader.html

About three weeks ago I went to a buddies house in western Virginia and made an awesome day ride - about 350 miles of all twisty backroads with hardly any traffic: http://www.lintners.org/rides/alex.html

I'll add more as I extract the data from the GPS. I'll try to incorporate these into my ride reports - it would be a neat touch!

John, That's amazing, especially the scrollable part.

Do you have to manually type in the waypoints, or can they be downloaded from the GPS?

I have had a GPS for a couple of years, and it's sad to say I have yet to learn how to properly use it... only take it out of the tankbag when I'm completely lost.

John, you do know that your .gpx files are viewable right in Google Earth don't you? You can even "play" the route.

No, they are 'downloaded' from the GPS onto the computer, then manipulated with software (I remove some junk, but it's not required) and create the webpage and upload to my web server. I have it down rpetty good now. Next I'll create trip reports with this integrated.

Yes, but I would have to send the GPX file to you and you view it. This way it's in a normal webpage. Let me know if you want the details.

Sure do, pm, mail, or here is fine.

Google Maps is growing on me. I see the utility in not having to have a separate client (Earth) to view the tracks.

I use GPSBabel to convert my Magellan tracks .gpx files.

Next thing you know you be using RoboGEO to georeference your photos.
