You could use soft bags. The Cortech Sport bags are awesome! I've used them for many 1000's of miles. I also have the larger tail bag which clips onto the saddlebags.

Re: Aerostich boots: should I keep them?
+1 for Combat boots. They do break in, I had the same experience of sitting on the bike with them brand new and not being able to flex my foot down. The guidelines for break in are really accurate. As for tucking your pants in, that is very retro. Old time bikers did that, my dad still does. So, for...

Re: Potential R1150R Owner!
The 1150R is a super fantastic bike, the best BMW of several that I have owned. It is very versitile. I use it for spirited back roads riding and for long distance touring (including Iron Butt rides). I highly recommend it.

Re: Back Rests
+1 on the Pirates Lair. The thing is great! It is quick release so you can easily keep the rear "low profile". It is well constructed and easy to install. You do need the luggage rack.

I also recommend joining the RA: http://www.bmwra.org/. The national rally is just up the road from you in Houghton, MI (in the U.P.).

Re: Is Anyone out there (or on here) from Wisconsin
There are a lot of active BMW riders in WI and SE WI. Check out: http://www.wiscbmwclub.com/ and http://www.madisonbmwclub.org/. I'm in Madison and am "on here" periodically.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the particular and specific shape of the beak is designed for necessary air flow to the engine.
