Which Bags Fit?

Post by Speedo66 »

Hi,

New to the forum, '04 Rockster just added to the family.

Can anyone tell me which original BMW side bags will fit with no mods? I know there are different names, models, and sizes of BMW bags, but I'm not familiar with them. Do they fit on the plastic side bars with hand holds or is a separate frame required?

Assume the muffler is removed to cover all sizes.

Thanks

If you remove the muffler, all the BMW "R11--R" hardbags(cases) should fit the OEM luggage rack.(The difference between different models of case seems to the the depth of the lid or outer half.)

You'll need the plastic bag mounting rails for the R1150R or R1150GS (the R1100R will fall into this category). The bag mounts specifically for the R1150R offers you the option of a joining luggage 'shelf', which is good for a small duffel bag or mounting a custom top case.

As for the 'system cases' that will fit without any mods, then look for "BMW System Cases" for the R11x0R or R11x0GS (The system cases were the same for R1100R, R1100GS, R1150R (including Rockster), and R1150GS.

The right side bag is the same for the R, RT, GS, and RS. The R11x0RT and R11x0RS bags will work if you have a lowered or removed muffler sice the left bag is larger (a worthy investment).

The R1150GS-A (Adventure) are the aluminum looking bases and will not work. Any "K" bike system cases will not work. Last but not least, any R1200 bags will not work.

Remeber that if you are going to mount the large left side bag from the RT that not only must you lower or remove the exhaust, but you must either add a bracket to the bag or relocate the nub on the left passenger footrest, as the slots on the RT bag are in a different spot.

You could use soft bags. The Cortech Sport bags are awesome! I've used them for many 1000's of miles. I also have the larger tail bag which clips onto the saddlebags.
