Destination: Custer, South Dakota (Volksmarch at the Crazy Horse Monument)
Trip Duration: 6 days
Trip Miles: 3127
Total miles on bike: 28737
Longest Ride: 823 miles in 14 hours
Motorcycle: 2004 R1150R
Seat: Sargent
Memories: Priceless!
This was my first long distance multi-day ride on the R. All I can say is that I had the absolute best time. The roads were wonderful and the bike performed without a hitch. We encountered some occasional rain/hail while riding through Colorado and Wyoming, but that was about it for the remaining five days.
The roads in Colorado are awesome! We had breakfast in Telluride before we made our way to meet the rest of the group in Glenwood Springs. I don’t remember the highway to Glenwood Springs, but it followed the Dolores River. That is one awesome road! There were lots of nice curving roads with views of the river and waterfalls. It was breath taking.

The ride from Glenwood Springs was equally impressive. I did manage to test the durability of my right system case as it flew off the bike somewhere outside of Denver while I near 100 MPH. I was able to retrieve the hard case and LOCK (my fault) it on my bike.
Custer, South Dakota, is a great place to visit. It’s a small town that’s surrounded by some fantastic roads. The ride from Rapid City (highway 44 to 385 I think) was so awesome. There were just three of us tearing up the highway back to Custer. All we did at dinner was talk about that stretch of highway; it was so awesome! The Custer state park is another great ride. Our motel provided free passes into the Custer State Park too. Nice! While rounding one of many hair pin corners, a huge buffalo decided to surprise us with his presence on the side of road. That was one big animal!

The visit to the Crazy Horse monument for the Volksmarch was unbelievable. The monument of Crazy Horse, once completed, will be the largest monument in the world. It was truly amazing.

We also visited the Badlands. That is one odd place to find in South Dakota.

Wall Drug. My friends said I had to see this place.

The trip was fantastic and the people I met in the various small towns were very friendly. I know this may sound odd for me to say, but I’ve always lived in large cities, so getting out to rural America is always a treat for me.
I’ll try to add more, but I wanted to get something out to the group to enjoy.
Oh -- my friend John has 196k on his '02 RT. Now that's riding!!!

Was this the trip with Bob and Heidi? I would have loved to go on that
ride but I couldn't get out of work. Glad you had a good time. Very nice
write up and report. Thanks for sharing.

Bmwdave52,
Yes, he has over 196 thousand miles on his '02 RT. John does a lot of of long distance riding. He also has an auxilary fuel cell so he can really cover some miles I believe he has only replaced the final drive on his RT too. And, I think that was done somewhere around the 100k mile mark, but I'm not sure on the exact mileage.
