Factory wheel finish

Post by ROXTR »

Are the factory (orange/copper) wheels on the Rockster painted or powder coated?

Are u sure about that? BMW was notorious in getting their wheels painted rather than powdercoated. That is why I needed to get mine chemically delacquered before getting them powdercoated.

I have the Roadster and mine are powdercoated. I had a shop that was changing my tires and their machine chipped the powdercoat. The shop owner said it was powdercoated. They had both rims repowdercoated. Guess I could be wrong, but that's what I was told and the chips were deep and it did not appear to be paint.

Allright. Could certainly be that this applies to the yellow rims. All the silver rims are lacquered and not coated.

Don't know the answer myself, but I'm guessing painted like Oliver says. I have some scratches on my white Edition80 wheels that make think paint, and not a thicker, more durable powdercoat. But finishing is not my thing. Of course, the white could well be different from the orange and citrus varieties, which look much better finished to the naked eye.

My orange wheels were definitely powdercoated, with a thick layer of primercoating underneath.

The same as a primer you use before painting, except this one is used before powdercoating.
It's a primer/filler.
This kind of powdercoating is called a duplex-system.
