Looking for oil - Castrol GP

I'm about to do a 24K service on my Rockster, but can NOT find Castrol GP anywhere other than BMW dealers who only sell it in 1 litre bottles at £5.50 a shot.
1) Can anyone confirm that the Rockster should be using 20W50 weight?
2) Can anyone in Surrey/Southern England recommend another source??

I have been using Castrol Syntec 5w50. I got it at the auto parts store. Many here have used Mobil 1 15w50, too.
Hope this helps. The above oils were more $ than the BMW dino oil, but about 2/3 of the BMW synthetic.
20w50 is right, but the above 2 oils are a bit better in cooler weather and warm up a bit quicker.

Halfords claim to sell it but it's £8.49 a litre, it's 2 for 3 at the moment as well but they had no stock up here.
Rang Castrol to find out where to get it and their tech support told me to use any four stroke oil I like as the motor is so basic in it's design so I just (this morning!) filled it up with Comma 10/40W semi synthetic. My first oil change. Comma is standard fill for cosworth engines and Caterhams so ought to be OK in the R!

I got my last lot from E-Bay . This lot do a freepost delivery for about the same price as you could buy from the shops (if you can find any).
It's 20w40 rather than 20w50 though (don't know if this makes much difference in our climate)

I use Castrol magnetec 10-40w car oil...After being a guest speaker at out BMW Motorcycle meeting an oil guy who works at Castrol rang me and said that he checked with the oil lab guys and they said it (magnetec) had all the fancy stuff that their bike oil has in it and it should be perfect for my Roadster..and is cheaper than their motorcycle oil...just a thought.

I know it doesn't answer your question but FWIW I use (as recommended by SPC before they folded) Castrol GPS.
Available from Halfords £25.99 for 4 litre container. Some stores only stock the litre packs (Guildford for instance). The Farnham one was where I got mine.
Might be worth seeing if they can supply GP in 4 litre packs. They also do an oil filter cup wrench of the right size for £4.99 or you can borrow mine if you're in the area.

So far i've found GP ONLY at BMW dealers or online.
I've been using GPS to top up and the bike is STILL burning a LOT off (like at least 300ml in 500 miles.
) So I'm going to stick with GP for a bit and see if I can finish off the wearing in properly (if it's not too late).
Will probably try to get 4x 1 litre bottles from a BMW dealer.

£5.50 per litre is not bad. I use Halfords own 15/40 semi synthetic in my R1150R and IIRC it was ~£20 for 4l.
Covers the usual UK ambient temperature- this is from the chart in the owners handbook.
Only done 12,700 miles so too early to switch to full synthetic.

It is hard to imagine life in UK without "WALLY WORLD" -the mother of all stores! and a source for cheaper than usual Mobil 1!!!
