Has anyone else installed one of these tail racks? My wife loves it , says it makes her feel much less like she is going to be thrown from the bike under wild acceleration. Gives her something other than me to grab hold of. Should be handy when packing for touring and rallies.

Mark: I have one, as well as the 28 ltr trunk. It's rather pricey, but what the heck, it's only money. Having the rack makes me feel more comfortable as well, knowing that there is less chance that I will unintentionally lose the SO on hard accel!

I enjoy having Mrs.Celticus with me most of the time, so if this helps her..............

Is that rack the same as the 1150R's? Looks identical from the photo,fits between the luggage mounts.

It cost like a brand new model.

Guys: Although the RR rack looks the same as the RT rack it is not. The rack for our bikes and the GT however, are exactly the same. I've been in contact with Jerry, the owner of Pirate's Lair about a stealth backrest. He has just finished a backrest for the new generation RT and then plans on developing one for the GT. Expects six months or so before it's ready. Needless to say, the GT backrest will work on our bikes too when it's done.

I had one on K1200RS and she DID love it. I wrote the Pirate and he said there were no plans to make a stealth backrest for the R1200R.
I will get the GT back rest when it comes out.

I have been following the forum for a while and am almost to the point of purchasing a new R1200R.
The bike I am looking at is fitted with the side luggage brackets and I would probably add the tail rack as well. The question I have is do the side luggage brackets need to be replaced to accommodate the tail rack or is the tail rack and bracket assembly a simple add on to the brackets already mounted?

Mark: The luggage rack/bag mounting rails are a separate unit than just the bag mount rails. The rails with the luggage rack have a separate rib that upturns for grab rails for the passenger. If you're looking at a new 12R I would tell the dealer to credit you with the optional price of the bag rails and put that money towards the luggage rack/rail setup.

Actually... to clear things up.. We just finished up the R1200RT project and we should have production pieces in a few weeks, but...

A. The RT rack is NOT the same rack as the GT.. they look similar but aren't so our backrest won't fit it..

B. I'm making only one other backrest then getting out of that end of our biz.. It will be for the Yammie FJ13. As the price of stainless steel has gone through the roof.. profit margins on these are all but gone and I refuse to keep raising the prices..You have to draw the line somewhere.

It's so bad that we're only making one production run of the RT Stealth then will discontinue... WE're only doing that to recoup our R & D costs..

A GT backrest isn't gonna happen..(nor for any twins) sorry guys..So it is written.. so let it be done..

I have the standard BMW RR rack shown in the picture.

I think it looks great with or without the topbox. I love BMWs new luggage system - simple to fit and remove bags and very secure.

I like the luggage too and the tail rack isn't bad, but I do think the bike is prettier without it.

Personally I also like the bike without the tail rack. However I do need some sort of back rest option for the SO. Would really prefer a corbin setup but they STILL haven't made anything for our bike yet.

I think they look better without the tailrack but the bike is just so much more functional with the rack.
