Wellnuts not "mushrooming" properly

Today I took off my touring screen so that I could install a set of GS Handguards. That installation went relatively easy, with no modification necessary.

But when it came time to re-install my windscreen, one of the Wellnuts would not mushroom properly. It was compressing too high and out of the mounting bracket. I switched around the Wellnuts, and it only seems to be happening in this one bracket. So, a new Wellnut is out of the equation.

Has anybody ever encountered anything like this? And if not, I'm open to suggestions...

Has happened on several of mine. Need to make sure the screw is going perfectly straight in. Also, spray some spray silicon in there and on the screw. You dont want the thread catching on the rubber and twisting it.

The internet truly is a wonderful thing. I did a search for "WELLNUT" on this site, and found multiple instances of the same problem. I found some good answers.

So, you can disregard this post.

Most of the answers basically said to go to Home Depot or Ace. After going to Ace, and having the help there be no help, I went to Home Depot. HD had a spot for the "expansion nuts", but the bin was empty.

Jonesing to go for a ride with the temp around 70 degrees in NY on Saturday, I rushed home and put some electrical tape, sticky side out, around the bottom part of the Wellnut. Jammed it in there, and tightened the screw. Seemed to work out okay. It probably won't be any fun taking out that wellnut, but I'll worry about that when the time comes.
