Windshield for tall rider?

Help!

I'm returning my second windshield (third if you count the Laminar Lip) and still haven't found any still air for touring. I'm 6'2" tall with long arms (so I ride my R1150R nearly upright) sitting on a Sargent seat. I loved the look of the BMW Touring shield, but even with the Laminar Lip it was too short. I also liked the look of the tall (23") Parabellum. It was better, but still buffeted at highway speeds. Is the AeroFlow investment my only remaining choice? I'm just about ready to go naked and get used to the earplugs!! Any and all advice welcome!

Thanks,

Richard

I think all windshields are noisy and buffet at different speeds...I would rather go without...it's soooo much quieter...and it's a better view with no screen.

The only problem with no screen at all is the you catch so much wind in the chest area..my little GS screen stops that..but still remains very quiet.

I'm 6'4" with long arms and I rotated my bars a little forward...I like it....it just something to consider.

DJ,

Thanks for the quick reply! I like the look of your screen - what would it be called in a catalog? Do I need RR specific mounting hardware?

I have the same problem. I have the speedster screen which throws the air directly into my rib cage.

There has to be a solution that is not as extreme as the aeroflow. I just hope someone has come across it.

I am looking for some more protection as well. I am 6'2" and ride my bike on the highway most of the time. I thought about the touring screen but after reading other messages it may not be the best choice.

Parabellum Super Tour shield at 23", Laminar Lip, GS Hand guards with Touratech spoilers, topped off with Areoflow Tank Wings. All these add-ons all work together to reduce buffeting to a negligible level. Noisy? You betcha, but not as bad as you might think.

I have taken 4 three day vacations to the Upstate NY area this year. It has rained at least 1 day every time. I was glad to have the tall windshield on those days.

The tank wings did not have the profound effect on buffeting mentioned in some of the other posts I've read here. Placing the top of the Laminar Lip 1.5 inches above the top of the Parabellum took care of that. The tank wings DO quiet things down considerably, to the point where I have not been wearing ear plugs lately. I can now hear subtle pinging before it turns into full blown, potentially damaging detonation. I can hear my valves tapping, timing chain slapping and the air entering the intake snorkel. Pretty cool.

I'm almost 6' tall with a big a$$, Sargent seat, and an Alaskan Sheep Skin Butt Pad to raise me up another 1/2 inch. I am happy with my current setup. If I needed better protection, I would lean towards an RT, or an Electra Glide.

I have the BMW Touring screen and agree with your assessment, but I still use it a lot.

I am thinking of trying this one, sort of like DJ's theory that a shorter one might be better.

I had a Fly Screen, which looks great but does not do much.

Yes, Bob,

I would love to hear from anyone who has used this MRA Vario shield as it is an interesting concept.

Thanks,

Richard

I'm now officially 6'2" after being measured at my GP. I blame the nurse for that extra inch.
Anyway , I use an MRA Vario and have no buffetting after I got the angle and position right. I Always use it at full height as I can easily see over the top. The wind just touches the top of my BMW system 4 helmet.

My MRA vario looks entirely different unfortunately! See

http://www.bikehps.com/acatalog/Screens ... Bikes.html

look at the MRA vario for naked bikes. Mine appears to have been fitted to the original BMW mounts for the small screen.

Gregor...is this it?...do you also have that little bi-plane thing on the top..or is that an extra bit?

I am going to try the Vario Touring screen, which is right below it. They claim:
The Vario Touring Screen for Naked Bikes (VTNB) is the latest result of MRA’s continual development target of ‘small-screen looks with big-screen performance’.

Uniting the attractive, unobtrusive appearance of the type of small screen normally found on bikes only capable of lower maximum speeds, but with the wind protection of a far larger screen, this is the solution to the problem for the sporty naked bike rider of how to get the wind protection of a faired bike without attaching an oversized screen.

The seven position adjustable aerofoil can widely vary the angle between the blade and the screen, reducing the speed of air approaching the helmet and upper body, without inducing turbulence. This, in combination with the adjustability inherent to the handlebar mounting system, virtually guarantees all riders of all heights an optimal position for maximum protection and comfort, reducing journey fatigue.

Not sure if this helps - but please forgive me as it's my first ever post, anywhere.

Called in at BMW dealer in Manchester (UK that is) yesterday and picked up latest Wunderlich catalogue, and they are also offering a Vario screen for the Roadster.
It looks very similar, if not identical to the MRA version referred to in earlier posts, and costs about £98. The catalogue specifically states that if you already have the speedster screen you don't need the additional fitting kit.

I couldn't find a picture on the uk web-site, but here is the link to the picture on their German website:

I've been giving serious thought to buying one - as winter is almost here and the speedster won't keep much of our weather off.

Anyway, I feel better having posted a reply instead of just lurking in the background as I have for the two months since I bought my R1150R.

That's the one - and to me it looks just like the MRA Vario.

I know others have tried that, so I'll ask the obvious question: Does it work?

The speedster is Ok at keeping the flies off the back of the clocks but doesn't do much else. I have a Givi A750 screen, but when I've tried it I get constant buffeting around the head that drives me nuts.

I'm hoping that in one variant or other the Vario may be the answer.

Wunderlich gear is expensive in the UK - if you have a dealer in Manchester, that's great, as SPC Motorcycles (BMW dealer too) in Hampshire where I used to get my fix have gone bust / under new ownership.

I have a speedster screen mostly because I like the way it looks. Per the advice of this page's tech tips, shimmed it at the rear mounts by about .375" to improve it's air flow performance. This mod still kept wind off my torso as when mounted stock, but created more buffeting on my helmet. I figured that there was going to be no way this little screen was going to get air flow over my head, so I moved the shim to the lower mounts and then shimmed the mounting brackets down about .375" so that the brackets were just about touching the plastic headlight bracket covers. Now the shield is low enough to keep the buffeting right below my helmet while still relieving pressure off my torso. Works well, cost next to nothing.

Just for completeness I checked the catalogue, and if you do need to buy the brackets to fit the Wunderlich Roadster Vario, (which you don't if you already have the Speedster brackets) they will set you back £57.40.

No mention of additional shipping costs.

Not sure how this compares to the original BMW kit for the Speedster.
