BMW seems to think that it can sell bikes regardless of the price.

I have loved every mile that I have put on my 1150R, but to price the R1200R at the same as my new FJR - I don't think so.

While you are at it, why not compare your Ford to the Ducati Desmosedici RR. At $65,000 you could get TWO F250's - and even have money left over. Or better yet, I paid $8,000 for my 57 Chevy Pick Up and ..... I better stop

With this truck logic stuff, why would you pay $30,000 for a ford F250? I bought a very servicable F150 new in 2005 bone stock for $17,500. Seems like you got reamed at $30K for a pickup. I could buy 2 Honda Fits for less than $30K & still have $$ left over.

For me its not how much the bike costs, its how much I want it. I don't care if my bike costs more or less than a pickup.

No one NEEDS a bike, we all just want one so bad it seems that we fall into 'need' when describing that desire.

Price is irrelevant to most bikers, if I can afford a $30k bike, who cares if I drive a $2k car... I'd still rather have the bike! This is the undisputable truth of the biker need. If it was not so, then manufacturers would set their price point at under $5k and we'd all ride economical scooters and captialize on the PRACTICLITY of two-wheels, instead of the PASSION, Manufaturers would never sell anything for big prices if desire was not part of the equation...
It's all about (heavily weighted towards bikes) Balance.

some people feel that all beemers are overpriced. some people like to spend their hard earned cash on cheap, disposable things. i'm not one of those people. i feel that you should by the best that your money can buy. if i were in the market for a quality naked bike, that girl would be in garage right now.

Well, an F150 won't pull my Horse trailer full of $$$$ Freisian horses. Basically an F150 is for all those wannabes: it's not a real truck - I mean you really can't do anything with it?!

I actually agree with you. I was just giving Flylow a raft of crap. I bought the F150 as a "throw away" truck to be used by a survey crew. I do overload it a bit, but they do last at least 150,000 miles with minimum care, and by then the employees have pretty well thrashed it, inside & out. An F250 would last another 100,000 miles, but at the cost and at the extra gas they eat, doesn't really make sense. If I drove the thing myself, I would buy an F250.

For towing I have a 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban with an 8.1L V8. Heavy duty for sure, but only 12mpg on the highway. I also have an old 1989 3/4 ton 4x4 with about 250,000 miles on it I bought new. That sucker is one tough old truck, the employees try & kill it, but it won't die. May be good for another 100K.

What do you know about horse trailers? I know find myself with 3 (well, 2 horses & a pony), have always paid to trailer them to shows, but might want to try it myself sometime. I would imagine if you have more than 3 horses you need dualies, something I'm not up for here in LA.

12 mpg - that's great - what are you complaining about?! I have an 89 F350 dually with a 460 gas, 3 speed automatic, 4:89 rear end and it gets a whopping 5 mpg whether fully loaded or empty, it doesn't really care!!!

When it comes to hauling horses the thing to keep in mind is that it's a "live" load and it will move around. A dually helps, but not really necessary. My new F250 isn't and while we can "feel" the trailer more it's not a safety issue. A gooseneck will pull better because the rear axle is bearing some of the weight of the trailer. A bumper pull is ok for short trips but they can get squirrelly.

As with hauling anything it's not a matter of "can you pull it" rather "can you stop it"! Most good horse trailers come with trailer brakes and they are a must. We have a small two horse bumper pull right now but with the new truck we're going to move up to a nice 3 load slant goose neck with a little camper up front. In my opinion Sundowner http://www.sundownertrailer.com/ makes the best trailer. Aluminum skin on a steel frame, high quality stainless steel - horse safe - hardware, you can't got wrong.

What kind of horses do you have and what type of showing? We have 2 old style desert bred Arabs and 2 Friesians - gelding and mare each. The Friesian gelding is a 4th level dressage horse and the mare is used primarily for breeding. The Arabs are the woods horses - I've been wanting to give the guys over at advrider.com a ribbing by posting a pic of my little Arab out in the woods with the caption: the Ultimate Adventure Ride"!

Man, I am NOT happy about the new price. BMW has raised prices across the board. OK, the R1150R was a great bargain, but still. By my estimation, I thought BMW was going to price the 1200 at $12k. Sure, my HD Dyna Glide Sport was more expensive at $16k, but at least Harleys keep their value better, even in this age of many being sold in the used market.

Good thing I keep my vehicles until the proverbial wheels fall off. I'm still in love with my 1150.

I don't have a problem with the BMW R1200R. I'm sorry to rain on your parade, but most people purchase BMW's not so much for looks or even the sports fun facter as much but for function, and quality and the ability to tour well, two up. If I want speed, I'll get a Ducati, if I want chrome and status I'll get a Harley, If I want to ride, a well made, though out machane that will most likely out last me & wife then I will get a BMW. As for spending $18,000 AUST on the R1200R, I have no problem. You get what you pay for. Cheers Si

Simoses - I agree. But BMW is pricing the R1200R awfully close to the R1200GS. OK, the differences between the two are hardly worth thousands, but we peg expectations on the past. And the R1150R earlier this year cost about 3k less.

I love my R, and fully expect BMW to crank out bikes that are just as durable long into the future. My next two bikes will most likely have Roundels on the tank. I'm just a wee-bit uncomfortable with their bikes getting close to the 20k mark. It doesn't matter how much money you have. You'll have more money if you're a smart consumer.
