Can BMW provide me with a duplicate key based on my bike's VIN or something? or is that a myth?

Don't know about that specifically, but my bike came with 2 keys.

Others have commented on a third key which was often retained by dealers for just such cases of loss. Could you track down the original dealer and see if they had a key?

Do you still have the little plastic tag with the number on it?

Mine came with a tiny plastic tag with a number on it...Supposedly you can get a duplicate with that number.

I got all 3 keys and one of them had that tag on it.

i got three keys with my bike.

unrelated but similar. my car key (toyota) turned out to be impossible to duplicate at hardware stores (lord i tried). i went to a dealer gave them the VIN an walked out with freshly cut new ones. i would guess that bmw would have the same ability.

i also would guess that they will ask for proof of ownership: title, registration, ID

I ordered a blank: 51252313229 KEY BLANK $4.20

Initially I had trouble getting it cut: it is steel and most "quick cut" places will not do it. However, I asked the dealer if he could do it and he cut if for free!

While we're talkin' keys...the BMW Cruiser key is a nice key..and it fits our bike..you just order it as a blank..and have it cut..I like it..here's mine.

You can get key blanks from a dealer.

Just take them with the spare key to any old key cutter they work fine.

Thanks DJ, love the look of that key. Mine only came with 1 + stash key, and have tried unsuccessfully to get a spare cut at locksmiths. I'll be ordering a cruiser key in the near future.

That's ok Damo...just a word of warning..well two things..

First it's heavy..I've heard of people dropping it onto the tank and it caused a dent..

Secondly..the key part is s/s steel..not brass like most keys..so..it might stuff up the key cutters grinding wheel.

If they notice that its steel before they might say sorry they can't do it.....just try somewhere else.

I took mine to my local shopping mall and a cheap Mr minute type stand did it without a problem.

Just letting you know.

yes, the dealer that sold the bike originally usually keeps the third key for reference.

Tip: Use a locksmith to have duplicate keys made. BMW keys (blanks) are made of stainless steel. The equipment and skill level of people who cut keys at home centers, hardware stores, etc. could result in a bad key. You only get one chance, ya know.

What does your tag look like? I've thrown a bunch of keys in a drawer over the years, along with the tags. The one I found that looks like it may be for the R is black and has 'GKS' on one side, and the key code on the other. Is that the one for the R?

The key I bought included the rubber end.

Does the BMW ignition use a pin tumbler? Maybe a bump key would work?

While getting the $8 steel key I bought at the local dealer duplicated at a locksmith shop (who changed back to his old cutting wheel so it wouldn't mess up his new cutting wheel), he told me that a BMW M3 key (for a car, made of brass) was available for $1.50 that would work in my bike, and then gave me a $12 bill for cutting the steel one! That's steal...not steel.

YES!!!! I bought an old airhead, owners lost the keys.. Give yr BMW dealer the chasis or engine number, proof of ownership, and I had a key delivered from Germany to Singapore in a week. For about US$30.

Outstanding!!!!
