"out of the hole"

I need some advice from some of the more experienced streetfighters here. What is the most effective way of launching my R 1150 out of the hole, without flipping it over. Please, no armchair quarterbacks on this one, experience only!

Out of the hole?

Is it just me?... I don't understand what you're asking.

marecycling,

I have to side with NHighCotton on this one.......BMW are not launch monsters and with a dry clutch!!!! much less.

If you want to persist on your line.....the best I can suggest is just ease of f at 1500 rpm, the moment the bike is rolling goose it and stay on the gas through the gears. Assuming the bike is stock, lean forward, specially on first gear to insure that you will not be the first one to attempt a 360 degree from a standing start.......if otherwise the bike is modified....Hmmm, Is your insurance up to date?

They do make a Kevlar clutch for the bike and some have installed it....you will have to get their oppinion......from my experience with race cars, the Kevlar is great for abuse, however is grabby and to get pass that on the street is either in or out.....not a problem when you have 900 hp and pop the clutch at 5000 rpm to get going.....on a car that is. 8)

i think that our bike is extremely difficult to flip over. i rabbit hole it all the time and have never felt the front end want to go over. it might lift off the ground but not wheel stand.

I see that you have been brushing up on racing lingo....keep it up.....rabbitt hole=hole shot, (leaving a red light or christmas tree faster than the other guy, not red lighting on the christmas tree) but I'm sure you knew that....it all depends from what part of the country you hail from.

I think our bikes like the clutch to be dumped rather than slipped..and without too many revs..and once hooked up..crank it open.

There's no real risk of looping it..IMO..although there's always a first for everything.. :D

when doing the "ride it like you stole it" break in technique, i was getting the front off the ground, barely. it was brief and very easily controlled. this bike is so heavy up front, shaft driven, and with only moderate power it takes off pretty gently. kinda like the motorcycle world's version of a big old station wagon.

be right back, the mrs. says we need some milk and diapers.

last year a groupmate flipped his piedmont beak in the drag. Revved it up, popped the clutch, and up and over she went  Luckilly nothing happened to him but his R was a messed up

You definitely do not want to slip the clutch on the BMW. It will heat up very quickly, begin slipping and wear prematurely with only a little abuse. Your better off launching it easy out of the hole and cranking her open as soon as the clutch is fully engaged. You can try to basically dump the clutch at about 2K-2.5K rpm. I've done this a few times on my Rockster and the front will lift a little. No more than 6-12 inches. But I think the Rockster lifts easier than the Roadster due to lower gearing and maybe slightly shorter wheelbase? :smt102 Not my prefered method.

I really enjoy the occasional stop light drags with the Harley/Jap Harley Clone riders around here. There are a lot of them too. Loud pipes seem to make some of them think that they are Big Daddy Don Garlits or something. Occasionally someone will roll up next to me at a stoplight, rev the motor, look over at you and make some kind of comment about getting a real bike. I usually roll out of the hole with minimal throttle and clutch slippage, once rolling at about 10-15mph, I dump the clutch and drop the hammer. Bye bye Harley. :smt098

Oh, I shift at the redline and don't back off the throttle when shifting. That's what the rev limiter is for. I don't ride like this very often, I'm more of a smooth pace through the turns type of guy, but the torque of the boxer is so fun to open up once in a while. I feel that the bike is made well enough to handle this type of abuse from time to time. All of my Japanese bikes have been.

Means to "pop" the clutch or let it out very abruptly. No slipping the clutch in the friction zone.

The same time you drop the hammer.

Ha Ha! Exactly. :)

Kristi, we are a bunch of silly boys here. It has been said that boys never grow up. There toys just get bigger and more expensive.

Now everybody, get out there and wind'em up, dump the clutch and drop the hammer for the holeshot. :D
