At a recent Rally my Topcase learned new trick.

I really was hating my Topcase because it looks like a hibachi.

yesiree, there is a short case of blue ribbons and a bottle of wine cooler in there....complete with ice.

.... you mechanical types can talk about all of your modifications........


I am sure I am not the first to consider this... am I?



Notice the chips in my hubby's case....We were so popular!

I can almost hear the conversation at the roadside . . . .

"Do you know why I stopped you mame?"

"No officer . . . I don't"

"Mame, you were weaving within your travel lane".

"Uhhhmm . . . . yes . . . the topcase weight up high and so far back kinda makes it wander a tiny bit".

"Mame, there's . . . water . . . .dripping from your topcase".

"Yes officer . . . . That's the ice melting".

"Would you open the topcase mame?"

You are so correct. I was the only one in our little riding group with any room to pack the goods. So we loaded the short case, the wine cooler and the ice in the case...we gave it a thorough weight test!
It was, of course, at the end of our riding day...but I had to travel about seven miles back to the rally. It felt pretty squirrely back there.


I just took it slow and steady....
It was a neccessary sacrifice.

Funny thing is that my gas light was on too. I did have the fuel to make it back....but the scenerio is not far from reality.
Like I say....a neccessary sacrifice.

We are headed back to a rally with this same group at the end of our upcoming 16 day road trip....Wonder what we will come up with this time.....???

Niiice topcase, what is it?

I can tell you that the case is a JC Whitney case. It comes complete with mounting plate for under $70 IIRC.
I had to ask Carol the same question, as I was looking for a topcase set up. Due to time constraints I went with a GIVI. You can bet that I will be using Carol's "trick" on my upcoming trip.

It's just before 11am here in SF and I'm already craving a cold beverage....
That looks positvely refreshing! What a great way to end a day of riding...

I gotta think about that....gravity and all.

I've used saddlebags when I owned an R80RT back in the mid-80s. Went camping with my girlfriend's younger brother (2-up riding) in the Sierras. The season still had a bit of snow at the base of the pine trees, which we gathered into the bags and used for "ice" to keep our food and beverages cold.

I gotta think about that....gravity and all.

Only after we had arrived and the case was dismounted and laid on it's side!

In July I did an Iron Butt ride with two GS riders. On of them used his big metal topcase as a cooler for the ride. Of course, we packed energy drinks and sandwiches instead of wine and beer

All you need is a 12V thermo-electric unit in there to really keep things iced.

Yo DJ, that pic is from here in Philippines, did you ride here too? You'll see all sorts of wierd stuff here. Just yesterday I dodged a truck's propeller shaft on the highway . A few hours later on my way home, it was still there Even stranger was I never even saw the truck

Oddly enough...the ugly little case is water tight. The following morning I poured the water out. A little later, I went to take a shower but all the showers were in use with waiting lines.........Man I needed a shower!



so this got me thinking.

I went and un-snapped the case, took it into the fairgrounds kitchen and filled it half full of warm water...then I found a private space and used it as a wash basin to take a 'bird bath'.

Is it neccessity that is the mother of invention?
