Artichokes and Otters

Post by taosports »

Every once in awhile I have a need to be near the ocean. To just sit and watch the waves. Today was one of those days, so what better excuse for a ride?. I used to live on the Monterey Peninsula (California) many years ago and since it's only a 90 minute ride from my home, that was where I went.

One the way down, I took a break in the small town of Castroville, which bills itself as the "Artichoke Center of the World" Had to get one of those DJ type photos with my bike in front of the giant artichoke that sits in front of a restaurant selling fried artichokes.

With little wind, the day was more suited for kayaking than sailing.

Hotels on Cannery Row. (Everytime I see Cannery Row, my heart sinks. Once a thriving fish processing center, it's now a tourist trap - with nearly every historic building demolished. So sad to see)

I parked on the beach just south of Pacific Grove and spent the afternoon watching the sea otters eat and play.

If you look closely, you'll see a rock on this one's belly. When dining, sea otters swim on their backs and use their bellies like dinner tables. They are are one of the few animals to use tools. They often use rocks to break open the shells of prey items by smashing the prey against a rock on their belly. Fun to watch!

That's it! Hope you enjoyed the photos.

Thanks, Michael.

Beautiful pictures again. If you guys on the west coast ever put together a ride/photography seminar......I'm in. How cool would that be; ride California roads, and get photog lessons from Taosport!

Mmmmmmmmm, artichokes. They grow artichokes that big here in Texas, you know.

And by the way, BMW needs to buy your bike picture for advertising.

That brought back a few memories. I was at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey in 1990 - 1992. The clam chowder on Fisherman's Wharf is the best I've ever had.

Great pictures and I really like the idea of the ride/photography seminar now that would be way too much fun. I am on the other side of the country but would figure some way to make it if it happened.
