Under fuel tank anatomy question

Alright, please bear with me as I ask a really dumb question. As I look below the tank on the 1150R from the side front (using a flashlight), should I be able to see the battery? There is what appears to be a sort of rack or plate in front of the battery, but there is nothing there--just an open space. I think the Motronic unit is above this. Should this open space be there? Is it (gulp) possible that my dealer left something out? It's a new bike and I had the 600-mile service done about a month ago, so who knows? Coincidentally, the bike seems to start harder than it did when new.javascript:emoticon(':(')

Again, I know this sounds dumb...but is there supposed to be an empty space in front of the battery? I don't think my old 1100 had one.

Anyone know the Roadster anatomy better than me? Thanks for bearing with me on this...

Your bike is a non-ABS model. That's where the ABS equipmnet goes.

Some relocate the charcoal canister there. Some install air horns there.

You could put your lunch there if it were easier to get to.

Of course....makes sense. You're right, my bike is a non-ABS model. Thanks for the quick de-mystification. Very much appreciated! Maybe I'll store a repair manual in that space, in case I have another dumb question.

The pic below shows a relocated charcoal canister and also a relocated diagnostic plug on the airbox lid. Compare it to the pic above to see the plug's original in-the-way location. Battery is a WestCo maintenance free.

why? you'd need to get the tnak off to get at the manual!

Has anyone moved the battery forward?? how difficult was it? Seems to me that this is the best use of this space.

Do you realise that you don't need that canister? It can be removed easily and thrown away. Unless you live in Califirnia. Just divert the fuel tank breather down with the other breathers and plug the underside of the throttle bodies.

When those of us in Europe first saw pictures of US bikes we all wandered what the 'tube' was for.............

According to the build sheet from BMW, my Canadian Beemer is no different then the European model. I don't recall seeing anything like that on my bike???

I am sure this has been addressed before but other than improving the looks, what other advantages are there to removing the cannister?

it's not really in apartment,
it's a room next to garage,
used for parking my bike
during winter.
