Just had the cat taken off and the Ypipe installed. All I can say is BETTER. The bike seems to do everything better. Accelerating from a dead stop, Mid range, High range, just regular running. Everything is just better. Its probably a combo of weight, and breathability. This machine now seems to act like a fine motorcycle. My thanks to the pros at South Sound BMW in Fife Wa. for more great work. Thanks again Neil, and all the other folks there that make it a great motorcycle store.

The charge was $353+$87 labor. I also had a compression and leak down test done, and the numbers were great. I kept the stock exhaust so there is not much difference in sound, at least with my ear plugs in. To my mind leaving as much original equipment on the bike as possable makes sence. I really dont care for the looks of aftermarket exhausts on a Beamer. The Pipe maker is Remus. The piece installed looks like it came from the BMW factory. More riding today of course. Have fun out there!

Just Did Mine yesterday! What a difference, everything like you say is better
Got mine for free from a friend, kept the original can, and swaping the parts was a breeze.

I just did mine last night, but now I occasionally get a small "POP" at low RPM's. Any one know why? I do like the peppy-ness it gives the 2002 R. Thanks....Steve

I have a Sebring Y pipe, and second the positive comments. They will pop a bit on over-run, more so if there are any exhaust leaks between header and exhaust. This has to be totally sealed with hi-temp sealer.

I installed a Sebring last fall and sealled the connection with an aluminium strip from soda can. It is easy cheap and very effective. I also used a Staintune low exhaust, with sound reducing insert, and now it is way lighter and sounds better and not much louder.

Mine y pipe stayed on about two minutes. Got it new from a BMW online dealer, the right pipe hit the engine case, the rear pipe was too short and the stock muffler would not slide on far enough to cover the slots. So, I could either slide the muffler on and not be able to use the stock mount or the pipe would not go into the muffler enough to cover the slots. Of course it leaked really bad. I paid over $400 dollars for it. I contacted the dealer and they said they never heard of that happening before. I sent it back and I have been waiting over seven weeks for a refund. They won't even answer my emails now. I can't remember the brand, but, it was made in Austria, I thought that would have made a difference in quality, but, it didn't. Nice to hear some people have bought a better pipe. I think I going the band saw / TIC route next time.

I installed a Sebring Y-pipe some years ago and was very happy with loosing the that 20 pound heater next to my ankle. Kept the stock can, so there was no appreciable change in the noise level, maybe a little deeper note with a bit less of the "sewing machine" character of the full stock setup.
Installation was very easy - everything lined up nicely and the Sebring has a well placed stop for the center stand. The only minor glitch was with the clamps: The wall of Sebring pipe is thinnier than the stock cat, so the stock clamps didn't quite fit. My solution was to make a pair of spacers cut from aluminum flashing. I doubled the thickness by folding the strip in half and got a good fit with no leaks. There is some popping or burbling, which I'm told is "normal" and was not noticable before the swap since it was muffled by the cat. There is an occasional backfire (very different than a pop), that I'm told could be cured by sealing things completely. It is relatively rare however and doesn't appear to have harmed anything so I'm not highly motivated to take things apart just to seal them back up.
I'd say the most noticable effect of the Y-pipe (other than things being cooler at foot level) is a slight increase in responsiveness.
