Okay, I am starting to lose control here. Every night when I shut the bike off, I center stand it, then 10 ~ 12 hours later I come back check the oil, and guess what, nothing in the resvoir. It has been like this for two morning now. So this morning I check the oil on the side stand and there is oil up to just past half way, but when its on the center stand there is none to be seen. I put in about 3 oz as soon as I got home last night then went for a quick ride, checked the oil agan on the center stand, no oil. THis morming I put in 1 more oz. On this mornings ride, oil was coming out of the oil filler cap. I am at witts end with this. Its either registering empty or blowing oil cause its over filled!!!!

You're doing it wrong.

Remember centre stand, gear off, side stand, kettle on, centre stand, check oil. The coolers don't drain if you centre stand it so it looks empty. Fill it up as you describe, ride it, the coolers flush and you now have too much and it comes out the plug!

By any chance, did you find that cap by the side of the road in Texas? :-)

I think that your procedure to check the oil is OK. It is your diagnosis about the overfilling that is not. Overflow oil goes to the bottom of the airbox, which you can check by removing the cap underneath the box. If oil comes out of the filler cap it is because there is something wrong with the cap.

As said - oil should be checked when warm/hot - not when cold.

I centre-stand it and if I remember I want to check oil, come back in 10 minutes.

Here is the original, Patrick approved, Darth tested, Dean vindicated, and Cyclerob certified method circa June 2002:

Warm from ride of at least 15-20 miles. Engine off via key only. Sidestand exactly 7 minutes. Center stand on level ground. Wait 1-5 more minutes. Read level. Optimum is center of sight glass. Acceptable is anywhere visible in window.

Of course, that is for a 2002 R1150R (ABS or non) single spark, 1st year of U.S. release. Euro measurements differ accordingly. Your mileage may vary. To each his own. One man's ....you get the drift.

I inadvertently turned off the engine with the kill switch once and my oil level immediately dropped to below the circle.

I then had to push start it so the air in my battery would come up to proper pressure.

Wicked!

Crank. I can't keep an eye on those spinners with my bi-focals.

You should go back and read some more of Boxer's posts throughout the forum. It will enlighten you.

As mentioned before, put the bike on side stand for a few minutes after a ride. this drains oil from the coolers and lines. Put bike on center stand for a few more minutes, the check the glass. In the middle is supposed to be perfect. I put in a touch more as mine is still consuming. Its all very simple. DONT PANIC!!!!!!!!!
