Looking to trailer my R1150R about 1100 miles as I am moving cross country and also need to take the car with me. Was looking at a motorcycle carrier that attaches to the hitch and only lifts the front wheel off the ground. The front tire is then strapped to the carrier and to the tow hitch. The rear tire stays on the ground. Does anyone out there know if this is safe for my transmission and drive shaft. Does the bike need to be on for the tranny to get oiled? Please help me as I need to figure this out before the end of the month. Thanks.

I have never heard of that or seen it, but it sounds like a very bad idea to me.

I have rented U-Haul motorcycle trailers that you can ride right up on to. It was very cheap too.

I tried UHAUL but they want the motorcycle trailer picked and dropped off at the same location. I have utilized it to move non-working bikes locally and the price cannot be beaten for that. $15 a day as I recall. A photo of the carrier I am inquiring about can be found at:

During a trailer thread some time back I asked about these and was given the big thumbs down by the others.

The said it loads the rear of the car too much aparently..and is ok for a short trip only.

I'm not convinced..I think it's a great idea..they also said it would wear out the rear wheel barings.....sheesh...no more than if you were riding I thought.

For what it's worth---you might consider picking up a used mc trailer or places like Farm Supply or Farm Bureau (Virginia) have small trailers suitable for a bike for about $300 and up.

I have seen small trailers here that will carry one bike for $300 (new)

Why not rent a regular enclosed U-haul trailer? They don't have to know what you are hauling!

Or what DJ said. You can always buy it used, then sell it when you arrive. Even if you lose money, it would be probably be less than renting.

I don't like the looks of the thing with the rear tire on the ground. That can't be good for it.

Thanks for all the input. I think I'll start by calling UHAUL to see if they have any used mc trailers that they are selling.

I have a product called "trailer in a bag".

It is made in Florida and sells for about $1k.

I have hauled everything from my 1150RT to a 225lb honda cr250.

It handles great, however, it does take two to load and unload.

The cool thing is that when your done using it you can dis-assemble the trailer and put it into your trunk. It is easy to store and does not occupy much space.
