Can someone suggest what aftermarket maintenance manual is the best for learning/doing your own maintenance? And where I could find one. I have no experience yet, but I'd like to learn how to do some things myself. Thanks.

Hi Kristi,
I recently got the Clymer manual and am pretty impressed with it (not that that means much).
Try getting it on Amazon...you'll find it for less.

If you search on line under R1150R.net (Doug) as well as under IBMWR.org; BMWST.com, ADVRider.com (Hall of Wisdom) and google Oilhead, R1150GS, R1150RT, R1150RS, etc you will find every needed reference for all the owner maintenance you can handle in a printable, easy to follow, and useful format--many with pics.
The Haynes and Clymer manuals are well known (and perhaps the only ones) commercially used for Oilheads.

Here's a plug for Jim Brooks once again...who has gathered much of the r1150r info in one place

I agree with MikeCam, though I have the Clymer Manual.
I recently googled "BMW system cases rekey locks" and got picture and text step-by-step instructions that walked me through the procedure successfully.
I have eventually found most of what I wanted in the Clymer's, but occasionally it involves a little searching to find the specific instructions for the r1150r because it covers all the flavors of the 1150's.

Hello,
It is good that you are going for the aftermarket manual. I bought the dealer manual on CD for too much money and it was a waste of good plastic. And I would stay away from the manuals offered on E-bay that are CD copies of something as I would fear it is just more of the same.
