Soft Luggage Recommendations for R1150R?

I tried every search string I could think of, but found little discussion concerning soft luggage for the R1150R. I have previously ridden an RT & LT for the past five years and bought a new 2004 R late last year. I couldn't be happier!! I thought bigger was going to be better and found the bigger bike (LT) just sat in the garage. Now I tend to jump on the 'R' for a quick romp around the (Big) block! Anyways, anyone with recommendations on soft luggage - brand, type, mounting, pitfalls, etc. would be much appreciated (pics a plus!). I anticipate a few 3-5 day trips this year. Thanks in advance.

I can't recommend any soft luggage, but with the ability to use the hard bags, why wouldn't you? They're about as durable as you can get, waterproof, and they couldn't be easier to mount and take off of the bike. If cost is an issue, watch the IBMWR Marketplace, the Buy/Sell section of this board and eBay. Chances are that you'll be able to find the bags and mounts in good condition for $400-$500 and you'll thank yourself for years to come realizing that it's money very well spent. Keep checking the classified sites every day because if you see 'em you've got to jump on 'em 'cause there are a lot of folks lookin' for a good deal on used bags. When I sold my 1150R, I sold the bags separately. I got no less than 10 responses in the first couple of hours and sold 'em for the asking price of $400 with the mounts included. I realized by the demand that I could've got more, but no biggie, someone got a good deal and is hopefully enjoying their bike that much more.
Actually, as I think of it, my friend uses Joe Rocket bags on his R1 and another friend used to use RKA bags on his Bandit. Both have had issues of stuff getting wet unless everything is sealed up tight in ziplock bags.
Ultimate recommendation, save up and get the hard bags. You can also buy 'em new at Chicago BMW with a 10% discount. Good luck, we're all counting on you!

HI, Hossier Rider,

What set do you have? Is marring the paint an issue? Do you have the foam protectors? And, are they secure, or do they bounce/swing around?

Thanks

John

I have the BMW hard bags for my Beakster. I also use a tank bag for things I want closeby. Where I get the most versatility though, is with a RevPak (use RevPak link in prior post) Tour Pack Jr (as the name implies, they also make a larger model). For a trip of several days, I use the hard bags and the tour pack (which "stradles" the passenger seat and, with provided straps, attaches to it). For shorter trips, I may elect the hard bags alone or, often better, the Tour Pack Jr alone. It's water tight (not waterproof - but they make a rain cover) and easily unsnaps from the seat to carry in for overnight lodging, etc. Alson check Wolfman for a similar product, the Beta Bag and Mini Beta Bag

Good luck with your search. Bob

Dr. Strangelove: I have the "Deluxe" model of the saddlebags(with built in stiffeners) as well as the small tankbag. The saddlebags are virtually waterproof without any kind of raincover needed. This is accomplished by the way the stitching is done so they don't penetrate all layers of the fabric with one needle hole. The tankbag isn't as waterproof but I do have a raincover for it. I have no problem with the saddlebags flopping around. You can adjust the mounting strap so they ride high out of the way of the wheel & then anchor the front by looping the hold down strap around the passenger footpegs. They can be removed from the bike in about 5 seconds & carried into the motel. With all that being said, it should be noted that I use this setup on a Valkyrie(I'm a lurker here, thinking about an R1150R) but I have no doubt that if I get the "R" Bike, these bags will be what I use. I don't like bags on my bike unless I'm traveling.

Dr. Strangelove: I forgot to answer a couple of your questions. 1) Paint marring has not been an issue because of the way they ride on my bike, the bags rest against a chrome fender strut. 2) I used them for a couple of years without the foam pads, but I bought them later in case I wanted to use the bags on a bike where paint contact was an issue. If I were to but the bags today, I would go ahead & get the pads at the same time & then I would be prepared for anything. Good luck in your search.
