Close Encounters of the Bird Kind

Been playing with a new camera mount, allowing me to attach a digital camera to my bike. Took one of the backroads near my house to test it out, enjoying the curvy road at about 40 mph and letting the camera roll in movie mode when I came across this :

That's a bird that just barely missed me. Whew! Needless to say, I was hoping I caught it on the video. These are frame grabs - still working on a way to post video.

Man Michael That looks like a good size bird. How big was it? I'm glad it didn't hit you. Nice pictures.

Now if you had hit it, that would have been an interesting video!

It happened so fast that I have no idea how big it was. Just glad it didn't hit me.

I seem to attract birds for some reason. Last summer I was coming around a bend when I spooked some turkey vultures feasting on road kill. They took off however one was a little slow and hit me in the hip and bounced off. In the process, it expelled it's stomach contents all over my jacket and pants. Little chunks of partially digested roadkill. Never smelled anything that disgusting in my life!

Those things are BIG! I came across one last year that decided to play chicken with me - it wasn't going to move. I move to the right in my lane to go by him. I started to hold my left foot out to 'punt' him but at my speed (about 60mph) as I got closer that bird got bigger! Needless to say, I retracted my foot. He never flew off, and I thought maybe I should've gotten him with my left cylinder.

Tao, I know how you feel. I seem to attract squirrels.
I should paint a little squirrel images on my tank. Just like the pilots do when they record a kill.

I Like it...
decided to play chicken with me
Using a bird metaphorical expression for another bird.

Okay, let me try it: I once had one fly across in front of me and I had to DUCK! It was like a C-130 coming in for a landing against a headwind. ...No wait that's a simile!

Okay, back to what you were doing. I'll just go have another cup of coffee.

I nearly got hit by a big old turkey once. If fact, his wing brushed my helmet as I ducked. Those suckers are big too! It would have made an interesting report for the Highway Patrol.

I hit a huge moth one time, I'm talking HUGE. When it hit my visor dead center it actually flicked my head back a little. Man, a bird square in the head must hurt like hell! :)

LMAO!!!! These are great!!!

Okay...first..(before the birds :P )...my Rock seems to attract something odd as well...BEES!!! At least 2-3 times a week on my way to work I'll have as few as one and have had up to 3 of the buggers hone in on me at a stop light. NOT while driving...but at a light the buggers will come buzzing around my handle bars trying to land on the green cluster cover! It's crazed!

Now onto bugs and birds....lol

I live in So. Cal and we get the priveledge of witnessing the migration of the Monarch butterfly every year...they cruise form here down to South America...and it's wonderful....unless...you're on a bike! I was off from work to go to the dentist and completely forgot about them that day...but was quickly reminded as I cruised along on the freeway and started having to bob and weave (just my head) to avoid them and was doing pretty well until I rode right into a flipping CLOUD of the biggest prettiest butterflies you ever did see! I had the distinct pleasure of informing the dentist and my wife that I had been assaulted by a Battalion of Butterflies. I had them splattered all over! Monarch butterfly wings and wing poweder inbedded in my airflow mesh jacket.....Ewwwwwwwwww!!

Birds.....never had anything big...but...I have had one of those fast pointy winged sparrow looking things cruise along with me just a few feet above me to the left just like dolphins do to boats and had one come dive bombing out of the sky at me once too! I ducked....all was well.

Okay....back to answering mails......good thread by the way!

When I had the brake system service done last time they removed the fuel tank and found a dessicated bird under there. I never knew I'd hit it, but since I bought my bike new and no one else has ever ridden her I guess I had to have been the one at the helm. I know I hit a bat with my previous bike.

I once got hit in the face, visor up and all...had just set off from a junction and was nicely leaned over round a sweeping left when a pigeon took off out of the grass verge and flew right into my face. Tasted bloody awful!

Great pics tho..show us a pic of our camera mount, I want to have a crack at that! :)
