Better automobile driver due to your motorcycle driving

Post by hotzuk »

Hey gang,

First, happy holidays to everyone. The other day my wife was driving and I got the opportunity to relax and enjoy the scenery. First, my wife is an excellent driver. The interesting thing for me was that even within the passenger seat I found it hard to turn off my "motorcycle spidey sense". I still find myself looking if the driver in front is straying across the lines, road condtions, looking ahead in the curves, how the oncoming traffic is taking the turn, etc...

I realize that these are traits that you should do when you drive an automobile as well but it does seem as though driving a bike heightens your senses. I would love to hear everyones feedback on this one. :)

When I first started driving a car on the road after years of dirt bike riding I found it hard to go around a bend at speed or even over a crest
because I didn't know what was around the bend or over the hill...off road there could be a log..a hole or even a cliff...so you would slow right down just in case.

Now when I'm in my car I find myself looking at the gaps between the cars in busy traffic and thinking
..if only I was on my bike...it's a bit hard to lane split in a car.. :D

My roadcraft skills improved beyond measure when I attained my full motorcycle licence.

Interestingly, you become more aware of road signs, and much more conscious of other road users. It's an amazing and salutory lesson.

Which is why my son is doing his bike test and car test together. It will make him a better driver.
