Y Pipe and backfiring

Post by Guest »

I just had a Remus Y pipe installed on my 04 and I am getting occasional backfiring. Has anyone else experienced this? The bike runs/sounds/looks great with the exception of the occasional backfire.

These things always have a slight overun backfire. It gets seriously muffled by the cat and the can to the point of being un-noticeable. Remove either one of these and it becomes more noticeable. I'm running without a can and it's there as well. No big deal and no damage will occur.

It's one of the best reasons to fit a y-piece isn't it ?! :D

Especially at night when other road users get treated with a nice burst of flame.

They all do that!

I have a "Y" pipe on my 1150R and a Lazer "Y" pipe on my Rockster - they both back fire occasionally on deceleration - damn - it sounds kewl!!

to my knowledge, that is why the staintune system runs a collector and not just a Y pipe....No backfiring! Something about the chamber is essential...Althought as has been mentioned, our beloved rr's like to gurgle and pop a bit on engine braking at decel even with the stock system on occasion.

my 2 cents worth!

The staintune collector box also backfires let me assure you.
I have the collector box and a staintune pipe fitted, the backfires tend to occur immediately when reapplying throttle after deceleration, and also on downshifts.
To me the backfres are a slight annoyance, made up for by the singificant improvement in midrange. Not just a psychological improvemnt, bike now lifts the front mildly under hard acceleration in first.

interesting regarding the backfires...are you running no baffle...when my baffle is in I get NO backfires but with it out, I get very infrequent small backfires that I describe above? either way, I agree, its well worth it. Also, the backfires are very similar to the stock setup on decel at hard engine braking

I get no backfire using the stock can.
Not as free-flowing as a performance silencer, but the throttle and driveability improvements are definitely there....

Mine still backfres with the baffle in, but not as much.
Maybe its the chip i fitted with it - a bit more fuel available for backfires i guess.

Did you get an annoying resonance from the box?

I am new to exhaust modification so please bear with this question. Is installing a Y pipe and removint the cat legal, or is it "LEGAL"? I'd like to do it myself but I am having enough problems keeping my Rockster under the speed limit. I don't need to give the fine folks in my local law enforcement agencies anmore ammo, If you know what I mean.

I think it depends on the state. It's illegal for a manufacturer to import a non-cat machine -- or at least one that doesn't meet federal emission standards -- but most states let you do your own mods. Sorta like noise standards... Suggest you check your state's DMV regulations.

DT, interesting! which chip are you using? As for the resonance, yes I am definitely getting it! I was kinda surprised but I am getting used to it and I wear plugs. Maybe it gives others the impression we have some "terminator" type horsepower source on our bikes... :) Sounds like u solved the problem with the stainless pins? With the baffle in, the resonance is less noticable for me so I think I can live with it but its not ideal!

chip install

The chip is a locally produced here in Vic australia - Ultimap.
They do a lot of ducati chips too.
My mechanic tells me it just shuts off the O2 sensor above 2000 revs, maybe this gives more fuel under heavy load? Might explain the extra popping. I ve no idea of the chip's contribution to the additional grunt avialble as I changed it at the same time as the cat and pipe - probably mostly the cat removal.
I haven't found any loss of fuel economy on the highway, maybe a few less km per tank thats all. I think I use a bit more fuel in the twisties but thats all about the higher rev range i frequent since dumping the cat.
I really appreciate the lessening of heat output in summer.

take care
