There's a high seat for sale on EBay with a pretty good picture... I'm sure if you dig around enough you can find part numbers, but this picture might answer your question.

I'm 6'4" and the high seat wasn't "high" enough, so I bought the Sargent and have been very happy.

Yes they fit each other...the Roadster comes standard with the low seat...the Rockster comes standard with the high seat.
So....I think there's two BMW seats to choose from...as far as I know.
Others here say there are three..the low...the comfort (tall)...and the Rockster (tall).
I may be wrong but I think the tall Roadster and the Rockster seats are the same.

explains why my Rockster fits me at around 6'4" pretty well.
FWIW it's 40mm difference on the seat hight according to the Rockster blurb I have pinned on my wall here ....

Would a 2001 seat fit a 2002-2004. I'm not sure which year they changed the bike.

Yes it should...01 was the first year of the current R1150R...
Before that was the old R1100R that has a seat that looks more like a horse sadle...it was adjustable in height.

so would a rockster and a roadster, both with the low seat, have the same seat height: 31.5 ish?

The Rockster even with low seat on is still higher than the Roadster. Its rear suspension is set a bit higher.

But of course the seat to peg differance is the same so both would feel as cramped or not.

There are actually three seats. 780mm, 800mm and 820mm.
The Roadster comes with the 800mm while the Rock come with the 820mm. The 780mm seat is only sold as a spare part.
It appears that the tall rider seat only comes in black. The parts page below shows the seats if you select "R1150R" then "dualseat" and then "dualseat and attaching parts".

Ok, here what I know. There are 3 seats between two bikes, The R and the R Rockster. The standard-31.5 in. (standard on the R), the low - 30.3 in. and the tall-32.9 in.(standard on the R Rockster). I think the difference in mm is greater than 20 mm between them.

The peg height is fixed and the seat heat increases so it opens up your legs.

'As cramped or not' That is the same high seat will be as cramped or not on each bike.

Anybody with a Roadster's low seat interested in trading for a Rockster high seat? I'd rather do that than get out the electric carving knife and start "customizing", but I'm about at that point...

I just picked up a 2002 R and am interested in swaping the seat. Do you know if the passenger section needs changed as well or just the front? Let me know if interested in swap.----------Rethy

I called the local shop and I gathered from them that you don't have to match front and back halves. It might be a good idea, tho. With the tall seat my bike came with, the back part was still a quarter inch higher.
Also, the part numbers on the underside of the seat turn out to be from whoever it was that molded the seat - those aren't BMW 11-digit part numbers.

The passenger half is universal but you might find that the covering material differs slightly, particularly if your build date is significantly different.

It may have changed for '04 but mine was/is an '03 Roadster and came stock with the lowest seat height.(780mm) I bought the mid height (800) from BMW Chi and sold the low seat to a board member for his Rockster. I have never seen the highest seat on anything except photos. From the photos I've seen this highest seat (820mm) has almost no dip in it.
There is a rear "Comfort seat" which is quite a bit higher from the stock.
I have a Bill Mayer saddle as well for the front part and I prefer the stock 800mm seat for short rides.
The seats are. or at least I'm pretty sure, interchangeable for the Rock and the Roadster.
