I have a Ram mount on the clutch reservoir of my '04 r1150r, that I used to use for my GPS. I want to start using my phone for navigation, but I am not really comfortable with my phone being that exposed when I ride. However, the area by the instrument cluster is really crowded and I can't figure out how/where to mount it where it will be accessible and not block things like the key and speedometer.

I am also curious which mount people are using. I want it to be secure but still fairly easy to mount/unmounts the phone.

Could anyone share pics of a good setup you have come up with? Thanks!

I put my Garmin on a rammount like this. You can buy the bolts in several sizes, buy a longer bolt and just replace the original one



In the picture below, they put it in the upper position, to keep a good view on the dash, I used the lower position.


But beware. I've read several posts on a Dutch motor forum where riders complain that the optical stablizer of the camera in their phones go absolutely berserk because of all the vibrations in the bike. Some even had to send their phone in for repair. And they were not using the camera but their navigation on their phone. It happened with a Honor 7, a Galaxy S5 and a HTC not with a Oneplus, iPhone or Galaxy S6 a Samsung S7 or Samsung S8.
It happened to riders with the rammount further out sideways (like you have now) and not when in a central position like I just showed you in the pictures.

I have this on mine. Love it. phone pops in and out in 2 seconds every morning. held in by spring tension, its a 6 plus with otterbox. I have 2 1500+mile trips on it. your concern about being out in the elements is a good one. I lost my old phone to water intrusion that way LOL. then stuffed it in my not so waterproof pocket. Rider error. it stays just to the right of handlebars, behind the sport screen.

I considered trying a lifeproof case, before my next trip. I also have a underwater case I used for snorkeling and taking pics in mexico, could try that lol.

However. an Interesting note in post above about camera jitters. I actually recently replaced the camera in my iphone, because the focus went out like that. (not as hard as you think only cost me 25$)

FWIW - Damaged an iPhone while mounted to handlebar via RAM mount (clamp + short arm + device mount) due to vibration. The mount assembly appeared to amplify bike vibration until phone bricked.
I'm still using a similar phone mount strategy, but remove phone on occasion if I see excessive shaking... phone replacement was costly.
Bought a vibration sensing app and now sampling vibration data from handlebar phone mounts on different bikes. My goal is to find mount dampening that can quell the vibration of the worst offender: probably the S1000 at WFO throttle, which is how the iPhone died.

bricked whole phone from vibes? ouch.

i find that if i mount mine too far outboard of the clamps, that happens. but right next to the clamps, it doesnt vibrate really, at least not noticeably! does have a soft boot, that clamps to the bar though.

ill check out this vibration sensing app.

The app is "vibration" (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vibrati ... 97580?mt=8). Very nicely designed and easy to use.

So far, the data I've collected on S1000 show vibration in the Y-Z plane, which is the fore-aft & up-down plane when phone is mounted conventionally. I need to get data during WFO acceleration on the S1000 to mimic conditions experienced when IPhone broke... was riding hard in NorCal on favorite remote roads. Phone was mounted mid-handlebar between clamps, but the mount setup was too heavy and likely exaggerated the in-plane vibration.

yep. and all links that any NON paid subscriber has posted, is now broken.

As long as you do not link to your pictures on any forum, all goes well. But I had to pay if I wanted my pictures to be visible on a forum like this. $ 399 a year.
