Rear Brake Light

I have a 2003 r1150r and am experiencing what I would describe as the brake light being stuck in the "on" position. I checked the bulb (t1157) and it has two filaments inside. Both are on, and I assume only one should be on as the tail light, and then when you engage the brakes, the other filament would light up also.

Your bike's front and rear brake lever/pedal pivot points are sticking and are in need of a take-apart-4-cleaning and greasing. You also may have a big bug squashed into the front or rear brake microswitch actuator(s). Finally, years of normal wear could require freeplay readjustments.

ABS or non-ABS?

If non-ABS, then follow Rob's troubleshooting strategy.

If ABS, then you would likely see ABS fault codes via warning lights flash sequence.

check the rear brake light switch. should be aligned right... and plugged in. when you lose that switch, lights always on....

i assume the front one is the same? I only know about the back, because I broke it removing the trans.

I had the same problem last year. Mine was because of the rear brake switch. Just cleaning it didn't work for mine. It seems as though the small piece of metal that is supposed to activate the small ball bearing that closes the switch to "on" had lost some of it's "spring action" and stayed on all the time. I guess I could have bought a new one but I played with the bend of the metal to get it to work properly again. I took me two tries to get it right, but has performed perfect since.
