Well, I spent 13 years in Ottumwa and I'm still not sure its a real place! There used to be a bar there called Radar O'Reilly's but that was 30 odd years ago.

210 mile ride to the Iowa BMW rally, NO SMOKE! -that was my fear... Id get there finally be around a bunch of other BMW riders(not an easy thing where Im from) Ive been trying to go never had time. JUST got bike done and remembered it was going on.... but then.... Id pull in leaving a smoke trail LOL.

re-re-REvisiting my thread.

though it seemed fine for a bit. I STILL have gear oil on my cat. VERY slow leak. I was kind of over it..... but it stunk yesterday (very hot out) what I Did last fall....a nice little jerry rig. brought home some non flammable "pigmat" from work. cut into 3rds. I roll up it and clip to bottom of trans case on that flat area. goes for a few months that way before its saturated.... then trans oil is ever-so slightly low.... I KNOW its trans, not FD or something.

its not output. I bought a new seal, then I took the swingarm and boot off to check for that. dry as a bone. left in. have the seal in case it ever has a problem.


what Iv'e done.....

rear input seal twice. (and added 2nd) it isnt coming out there....i installed a drain tube-its dry.
front input seal(wasnt bad to begin with did as precaution after crabbing frame)
neutral switch seal(maybe buggered up the inside?
checked output seal..

I don't see anything coming out the trans vent.... could it be and I cant see it? how do I check that vent is operating...? its not overfilled. i use center stand.

seems its gotta be either that vent, or the neutral switch.

but I cant tell.

4 yrs on, bike still drips gear oil. lol man am I on top of things!!

my only thought is its leaking from the neutral switch. no oil from the output. no oil from the input. I replaced all those seals though....so my concern is a buggered up the area around the neutral seal.

breather is clear.

if thats the case, thoughts on using some sort of sealant behind the switch?

I've no idea how the neutral switch is installed - but I used to seal the oil-drain plug on my ZXR400 with a tiny bead of silicon-sealant (eg Dow Corning - I think - 701? something like that) which I put around the bolt, inside of the washer, when re-fitting. The bead of sealant wasn't more than a mm or so in diameter, so not enough sealant to spread everywhere - but enough to create a seal. So - put washer onto bolt, squeeze out very small bead of sealant around the bolt, up against the bolt, onto the washer, then install into hole.

I think ALL my Rocksters have had that..... I firmly believe it's the gearbox output shaft seal being 'not very good' - but as the seal is above the level of the gearbox oil when at standstill (ie it won't leak when parked, only when in motion and oil is flung around inside the box), then I don't see the issue.

I'm not sure if the gearbox even has a pressure-relief valve - but if so, then the 'leak' can probably be mitigated by checking the function of that relief valve - the leaking out of the output shaft is likely a symptom of a blocked pressure-relief-valve.

its minor. the boot is(or was lol) dry. replaced output seal anyways since it was apart..

I replaced the input shaft seals. Because of the slave failure....it was also dry in there last time i checked.

replaced that neutral switch seal too. twice. to no avail.

is the switch itself bad? lol

i used a screw to yank the seal out...rather carelssly. wonder if I knicked the area around it...

... and without peels' peer pressure to urge my needed final drive leak repair, I did the next best thing: crashed Rockster2. The bike and I each did a forward flip, with bike landing on me. Such affection and closeness.

There's oil oozing on one side near cylinder now.

Yes, the bike landed on me... right side valve cover and handlebar were on asphalt surface, but I - always dedicated to preserving our beloved R1150R antiques - sacrificed myself to keep all other motorcycle parts road-rash-free.

I will keep the vid public for a week or so.
